action

Mitchel, called Mitch, is released from Pentonville Prison after three years . His buddy Billy picks him up there and gets him an apartment that belonged to a doctor. Before his evening welcome party, Mitch visits homeless Joe and gives him money. At the party, Mitch meets Penny, who invites him to a villa in Holland Park, because she sees him as the right person for a certain job: Mitch is supposed to be the caretaker in the villa of the reclusive film star Charlotte. However, he refuses the job and instead helps Billy collect money. His boss, the gangster Gant, offers Mitch a large sum to rob Charlotte's villa, but Mitch rejects the offer.

Shortly thereafter, the homeless Joe, with whom Mitch was on friendly terms, is murdered, whereupon Mitch lets the perpetrators be searched through his contacts. Gant forces Mitch to meet with him and tries to get him to his side with increasingly brutal methods. However, Mitch vehemently refuses to work for Gant. When Mitch receives the name of Joe's killer, he seeks revenge. When he finally stands behind Joe's killer to shoot him, he lets go because he wants to part with his criminal past.

Although Mitch had not accepted the job of caretaker, he spends time with Charlotte in her villa in Holland Park, which is besieged by unscrupulous paparazzi. Mitch takes on the role of her bodyguard and moves into the servants' house next to Charlotte's villa. He and Charlotte get closer and eventually spend the night together. When Charlotte receives an assignment, she has to fly to Los Angeles, and Mitch decides to take care of Gant after Billy is found dead at Charlotte's mansion.

Since Gant couldn't convince Mitch to work for him, he set up a murderer on Mitch. However, this beats the killer and kills him. He then penetrates Gant's villa and shoots him. When he can finally follow Charlotte to Los Angeles, he is stabbed by Joe's killer and dies. Charlotte announces through her attorney that she has no relationship with Mitch.

criticism

"Straightforwardly designed thriller, which is increasingly fascinating with its extraordinary volts and condenses into a pitch-black gangster and love story as well as an exciting puzzle between cool facial expressions and incidentally sharp dialogues."

"What sounds like stylish genre cinema unfortunately turns out to be a half-baked crime film adaptation with consistently good actors. Some scenes are strong, others are almost involuntarily funny. At least the good camera work by Chris Menges helps over the shortcomings in the character drawings. "

“'London Boulevard' is a dirty little film, but shot in a grand, pathetic style. […] Brutality with style, cynicism as self-protection, an exaggerated desire for elegance: So it is apparently cool to be a gangster. The days of this coolness are over in 'London Boulevard', screenwriter William Monahan is looking for it. "
