Last Life in the Universe ( เรื่อง รัก น้อย นิด มหาศาล , Ruang rak noi nid mahasan , alternative German title: Afterlife in Bangkok ) is a Thai film director Pen-Ek Ratanaruang from the year 2003 .
action
The Japanese librarian Kenji works in the Japan Library in Bangkok . He speaks only rudimentary Thai and finds it difficult to get along in the foreign country. He also suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder and has suicidal intentions. His attempts to murder himself fail. He is in contact with his brother Yukio, a yakuza who fled from Japan to Thailand because of the revenge of his employer. Kenji meets the prostitute Nid in the library when she is borrowing a book from Yukio Mishima while wearing an eye-catching school uniform. When Kenji tries to throw himself off a bridge, the sisters Nid and Noi stop with their car. Nid is run over while trying to help Kenji.
Kenji later moves in with Noi in the neglected house of Noi's parents, cleans it and comes closer to Noi. The language barrier is broken by a change from Thai to Japanese and later to English. At the end of the film, Noi takes a job as a waitress in Japan.
criticism
"A tender, impressively photographed love story full of poetry that focuses on small gestures, nuances and looks and develops an enigmatic story outside of the conventional narrative framework."
