Monrak - Magical Love ( Thai . มนต์ รัก ทรานซิสเตอร์ - Monrak Transistor ) is a Thai feature film from 2001 based on the novel by Wat Wanlayangkoon .

action

The provincial singer Phaen lives for his music. During one of his appearances, he meets the pretty Sadao. The two get closer; Phaen finds a casual job in her father's farm. Initially, Phaen is not accepted by Sadao's father, but he finally agrees to the marriage of the two.

When Sadao was expecting her first child, Phaen received word that he was being drafted into military service. Soon after, he had to leave his family behind, but promised to write regularly. When Phaen reads the poster for a singing competition outside the barracks in Bangkok , he immediately decides to take part. Membership in a famous pop band beckons the winner. In fact, Phaen then has the opportunity to perform his own song on stage without an instrument. The audience is thrilled, and Phaen is already dreaming of a great career as a singer. Phaen makes a momentous decision: he deserted , did not return to his barracks; instead he stays in the pop forge from now on.

His manager promises him a brilliant career as a singer and wealth. But Phaen has to start at the bottom: At first he is not allowed on the stage, but has to scrub the floor. When Phaen is still not allowed to sing for anything after two years of cleaning and as a girl, he calls on his manager. He advises him to be patient and gives the bad economic situation as a reason.

When Phaen cheats one day with one of the pretty singers, a little later the opportunity arises for him to finally appear on stage as a singer. The audience celebrates him, and his manager is also enthusiastic about him and wants to make Phaen famous.

Meanwhile, Sadao is plagued by feelings of longing for her husband. She decides to go to Bangkok with her father to finally see Phaen again. When Phaen performs his "Song of the Sad Recruit" in front of the audience, Sadao and her father are also among the audience. Sadao is touched knowing that the song was written for her.

At the end of the concert, Sadao has the opportunity to give her husband a quick hug; Phaen's manager is already waiting impatiently for him in his car. He takes Phaen home with him and takes photos of his half-naked body - under the pretext of mediating him as a model - and becomes intrusive. Phaen defends himself violently and pushes him away in disgust. The man falls on his back and is fatally injured on his glass table.

Phaen has to flee and by chance comes across a bus that is ready to leave and full of plantation workers. He gets in and at the end of the journey finds himself working in a sugar cane plantation . An overseer makes work difficult for his workers. His passion is gambling. When he loses a game with one of his workers, he doesn't want to pay his gambling debts. Thereupon that worker insults him as a son of a bitch and gets a beating from him. Phaen, who witnessed the incident, knocks the overseer to the ground and flees with his friend from the overseer and his henchmen .

The two manage to escape, but now they find themselves penniless in the streets of Bangkok. Phaen and his friend mingle with the fine company of a costume ball, but are soon exposed and thrown out. When they steal jewelry from a passerby on the street, the police are after them. His friend successfully escapes and goes into hiding, but Phaen is involved in a traffic accident and arrested shortly afterwards.

Because of desertion and theft, Phaen has to spend several years in a prison camp. After serving his sentence, he just wants to go back home to his wife and child. On the street he meets his friend, who now runs his own business and has taken Phaen's former lover, the singer, as his wife.

Phaen returns home and meets his wife on the melon plantation . But she doesn't want to know anything more about him and has already declared him "dead". But Phaen regrets everything he has done and he finally manages to win back his wife's love.

background

"The first satirical, then increasingly dramatic story is dedicated to a murdered Thai pop star of the 60s."

criticism

"Sensitively staged development story, which tells of big dreams and shattered hopes in a mixture of drama, humor and romance and sharpens the eye for the little things in life."
