occupation

12 is a Russian remake of the feature film The Twelve Jurors by Sidney Lumet , directed by Nikita Michalkow . The plot, which was originally set in the United States, has, however, been updated against the background of the Chechnya conflict. 12 was nominated for an Oscar for best foreign language film in 2008.

action

The film begins after the evidence of a criminal trial in Moscow against a young Chechen who is accused of murdering his Russian stepfather, an officer in the Russian army, has ended.

The eponymous twelve jurors are locked in the gymnasium of a school for the time of their decision-making, which must be unanimous for a guilty verdict. Although actually all twelve assume his guilt, one of them opposes a quick decision.

The discussion about the trial is repeatedly interrupted by flashbacks to the defendant's youth, overshadowed by the Chechnya conflict. As the film progresses, more and more jurors come to the conclusion that they are innocent. When only one juror is against the acquittal, the latter reveals himself to be a former officer; he was also convinced of the innocence, but a conviction would be better for the accused, since otherwise the guilty of the murder would also murder him. But he can be changed.

After the acquittal, the former officer promises the boy to hunt down the real perpetrators.

Prices

The film ran in the program of the Venice International Film Festival 2007 , where Michalkow was awarded for his life's work. In the reason for the award, the film was recognized as “new evidence of Michalkov's mastery in cinematic exploration and exposure of the complexity of existence”. The film was nominated for the best foreign language film at the Academy Awards in 2008, but it came away empty-handed. The film won two Russian Nika film prizes for 2007, Eduard Artemjew for the film music and Sergei Garmasch for best male leading actor.
