Nic Balthazar

Nic Balthazar (born July 24, 1964 in Ghent ) is a Belgian TV journalist for VRT , author and film director.

Life

Balthazar was born the son of the former East Flemish governor Herman Balthazar . After visiting the Royal Atheneum Voskenslaan in his hometown of Ghent, he attended the local university on a degree in Germanic languages with an emphasis on Dutch and Swedish. In addition to his studies, he wrote theater reviews for the daily De Morgen . He later directed a number of plays himself.

His radio career began with the Flemish radio station Radio 1 and Studio Brussel , where he presented news from the film sector. He later led his own talk shows as a moderator. He then became known in particular through his film magazine Filmfan , which was broadcast on the television station Canvas , as well as through his travel program Vlaanderen Vakantieland with reports from home and abroad.

In addition to columns and articles for various daily and weekly newspapers, Balthazar wrote the youth novel Niets was alles wat hij zei (translated: Nothing was everything he said ). After the book's success, he reworked it into the play Niets , which premiered with Roel Vanderstukken in the lead role. In 2006 he adapted the book in the feature film Ben X , which was released in September 2007 in Belgium and had its German premiere during the Berlinale 2008 . It tells the story of an autistic teenager whose real world mixes with that of an online game.

For the film, Balthazar received the Grand Prix des Amériques , the Audience Award and the Ecumenical Jury Award at the 2007 World Film Festival in Montreal .
