occupation

Martin Eden is a film drama directed by Pietro Marcello that celebrated its world premiere on September 2, 2019 at the Venice Film Festival and was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival that same month . The film is based on the novel of the same name by Jack London .

action

Martin Eden, a young man of proletarian origin, wants to leave this behind. To do this, he tries to win the heart of a young woman from the upper, educated and cultivated class. Even if he achieves his ultimate goal of becoming a successful writer, the increasing individualism of the 20th century destroys him. The meeting with the philosopher Russ Brissenden, who suffered from tuberculosis, through whom he began to deal with the forms of socialism and got to know Herbert Spencer's theses, cannot change this either .

Literary template

Martin Eden is considered one of Jack London's greatest works. The partly autobiographical novel was first published in 1909 and tells the story of an uneducated, uncouth, but worldly young man. Martin Eden believes that the only way to win the affection of a girl from the upper class is by gaining education and respect. Later he decided to live as a writer from now on, refined his language and wrote fictional and autobiographical stories of a past as a sailor. The novel, in which London processed his experiences in a world that he perceived as hypocritical and hypocritical, is now regarded as his most important work.

production

Directed by the Italian Pietro Marcello , who together with Maurizio Braucci also freely adapted London's novel for the film.

The film received a production grant (Aide aux Cinémas du Monde) from the CNC - Institut français and from the Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung in the amount of 200,000 euros.

Luca Marinelli can be seen in the title role of Martin Eden.

The shooting took place in Naples from mid-May to mid-December 2018.

The film music was composed by Marco Messina and Sacha Ricci . The soundtrack was released for download by RaiCom in mid-November 2019.

The premiere took place on September 2, 2019 as part of the Venice Film Festival . In September 2019 it was also presented as a graduation film in the Platform section of the Toronto International Film Festival . At the end of September and beginning of October 2019 it was shown at the New York Film Festival and the Hamburg Film Festival, and at the London Film Festival in the same month . In January 2020 it was screened at the Palm Springs International Film Festival . In mid-September 2020 it will be presented at the Leipzig Film Art Fair. A theatrical release in Germany is planned for October 15, 2020.

Reviews

Michael Meyns from the Gilde deutscher Filmkunsttheater writes that from the very first pictures a strange timelessness pervades the scene, which makes it difficult to assign the pictures to a certain era. Inevitably one looks for signs, for clothes, for features that would clearly assign the film to this or that era, but in vain. This deliberately irritating game is held together over time on the one hand by the physical presence of the main actor Luca Marinelli , on the other hand by the thought that the individual inevitably fails to assert himself against the structures of society: “It is not Martin Eden who changes them through his fame Society but society changes him. His socialist thoughts are lost as soon as he himself becomes part of the social class that he actually rejects. "
