action

Martin was once one of the best teachers in his high school. But now he feels empty and burned out. Martin is hardly noticed by his students in class. And the parents also try to get rid of the less motivated teacher. In addition to the problems at work, there are also marital problems with his long-suffering wife Anika.

One day when Martin, who had previously been abstinent, got very drunk at a birthday party with his best friends and also disaffected work colleagues Peter, Nikolaj and Tommy, they had the brilliant idea. Nikolaj reports on the obscure theory of a philosopher who assumed that people are not born with enough alcohol in their blood. He therefore proposes a kind of "scientific experiment" to his friends. Martin, Peter, Nikolaj and Tommy should try to get drunk every day and thus maintain a constant level of 0.5 per mil.

The drinking experiment seems to be a success. The four teachers feel alive again. Martin in particular benefits from the method. He succeeds in making his lessons creative and thrilling again, much to the astonishment of his wife Anika. But it soon becomes apparent that not all of the four friends can keep control of the drinking. Conflicts that have built up for years are emerging. Martin, Peter, Nikolaj and Tommy then have to make a decision. Should they deal with their problems or continue the experiment?

History of origin

Director Thomas Vinterberg (2010) finished the film despite his daughter's accidental death.

The film was inspired by the theories of the Norwegian psychologist Finn Skårderud , according to which a person is born with a blood alcohol level of 0.5 parts per thousand. Director and screenwriter Thomas Vinterberg was introduced to this non-scientific thesis through an email from his Norwegian film editor Anne Østerud . Vinterberg and his long-time script partner Tobias Lindholm would have spent several years working on a possible script, where they wrote the character of Martin Mads Mikkelsen on the body. Mikkelsen had previously successfully starred in Vinterberg's multi-award-winning drama Die Jagd (2012).

Vinterberg originally wanted to entrust his eldest daughter Ida with the role of a schoolgirl, which would have made Der Rausch her film debut. Vinterberg's daughter's school was also used as the location, while friends of hers were cast as students. In early May 2019, four days after film production began, Ida died at the age of 19 in a traffic accident on a Belgian motorway. Vinterberg's ex-wife Maria Walbom, Ida to friends in Pariswanted to drive, survived the car accident injured. Another driver, distracted by his mobile phone, had rammed into their car. Although Vinterberg was traumatized by his daughter's sudden accidental death, he decided to resume filming after her funeral. He was supported by his screenwriting colleague Tobias Lindholm. In a situation of uncertainty, according to the main actor Mikkelsen, the actors would also have met and discussed how to proceed and how they would react. They decided to follow Vinterberg's instructions because it was exactly what he needed at the time. In the final version of the film, the main character Martin is the father of two sons, but Vinterberg added the credits a dedication to Ida in the credits.

Originally Vinterberg had planned to make the alcohol scenes less comedic. After several versions without slapstick , he returned to the original plans. In rehearsals for the film, the actors tended to actually consume alcohol. Vinterberg then banned drinking on the film set for practical reasons. Instead, the performers studied Russian YouTube videos of marathon drinking bouts.
