Life

childhood

Halina Reijn and her sister grew up with parents who belonged to the spiritual Subud movement and who meditated regularly.

Her father, who died when Halina was ten years old, had a dominant nature and was an artist by profession with his own studio in the garden. Despite his homosexuality, he had married Halina's mother because the desire to have children was more important to him than actual homosexuality. It was only shortly before his death, after separating from his wife, that he began to pursue his homosexual tendencies and had a partner.

To the great horror of her parents, between the ages of six and seven, Halina and her sister had a strong desire to be baptized Catholic . But since the desperate parents rejected dogmas, the children finally got their will and a big Catholic baptism was celebrated. In the Catholic Sunday School, much to the delight of Halina, one was allowed to paint lines and fill out contours with colors, something that was not allowed in the “Free School” that she usually attended. Everything had to be limitless. Colors also had to flow into one another without limits. After she had filled in many pictures of Jesus with colors in Sunday school, she happily noted in her diary: “Nu ben ik Eindelijk een normaal meisje!” (Now I am finally a completely normal girl!)

Theater play

In her youth, Reijn played at the Vooropleiding Theater in Groningen . She attended the Theater Academy of Maastricht and even during her training she managed the leap into the ensemble of the theater company , where, for example, in Hamlet , the Ophelia played. In 1998 she got here for the role of Lulu in Shopping and Fucking the " Columbina " (Dutch theater award) for the best female supporting role. In 2003 she moved to the Ensemble Toneelgroep Amsterdam . Here she appeared in four roles side by side in the 2006/07 theater season: in Henrik Ibsen's Hedda Gabler , in the ancient Greek tragedy Orestie , Eugene O'Neill's Mourning Becomes Electra and William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew .

In parallel to her theater career, she has also appeared on Dutch television and cinema since the early 1990s. Her breakthrough as a film actress came in 2003 with Maarten Treurniets ' drama De Passievrucht , for which a year later she was nominated for the first time for the Golden Calf for Best Actress , the most important film award in the Netherlands. She also acted under the direction of well-known directors such as Paul Verhoeven ( Black Book ) or Bryan Singer ( Operation Walküre - Das Stauffenberg assassination ). Along with other young European actors such as Maximilian Brückner , Mélanie Laurent and Maria Popistașu , she was honored by the European Film Promotion as Shooting Star of the Year 2007.

In 2005 she published her first novel under the title Prinsesje Nooitgenoeg .

Reijn's debut film as a director Instinct was selected by the Netherlands as a candidate for an Oscar nomination in the category of Best International Film in 2019 .
