Václav Marhoul (born January 30, 1960 in Prague ) is a Czech film actor , director and screenwriter .

Life

Born in 1960 in Prague, Václav Marhoul initially worked as an actor in the Prague artistic group "Pražská pětka" (for example: the Prague Five) and in the theater "Divadlo Sklep". After graduating from the Film and Television Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague in 1984, he began as a production assistant and later as deputy production manager at the Barrandov film studios . Marhoul was also increasingly active as a director and screenwriter , but also as a cultural organizer and manager. After the Velvet Revolution , he was general director of the Barrandov film studio for seven years, but also worked as an organizer of cultural events and manager of the artist group Tvrdohlaví ("Stubborn").

His film The Painted Bird , for which he directed and also wrote the screenplay, he presented in September 2019 at the Venice Film Festival in the main competition, where he competes for the Golden Lion . The film was submitted by the Czech Republic as a contribution to the 2020 Academy Awards in the category Best International Film and was shortlisted in this category by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in mid-December 2019 .

Marhoul is a member of the supervisory board of the Czech Film and Television Academy ( Česká filmová a televizní akademie ).

His daughter Anna Marhoulová, born in 1993, played a leading role in Tomáš Vorel's comedy film Skřítek from 2005.
