Douglas James Henshall (born November 19, 1965 in Barrhead , Scotland ) is a Scottish actor.

Life

Douglas Henshall, sometimes also called Dougie Henshall, played his best-known role in the television series Primeval - Return of the Primeval Monsters , which he left in the third episode of the third season because he wanted to focus on new challenges for his professional development after 2½ years of filming .

Henshall grew up in Barrhead and attended Barrhead High School there. During school he attended the Scottish Youth Theater in Glasgow . After leaving school, he moved to London to study at the Mountview Theater School. While in London, he received critical acclaim for his theatrical work, particularly Life of Stuff at Donmar Warehouse (1993) and American Buffalo at Young Vic (1997). He then returned to Glasgow to join the 7:84 Theater Company.

One of his first successful film roles was as Edgar in Angels and Insects (1995), then he starred in Orphans (1997), Lieber Yesterday Than Never ... (1998) and Lawless Heart (2001), among others . He also starred in some mini television series such as Psychos (1999), Kid in the Corner (1999) and Loving You (2003).

In 2009 he starred in the role of Alan Campbell in the film The Portrait of Dorian Gray .

In 2015 he played the supporting role of Taran MacQuarrie in the television series Outlander , the leader of the group that calls himself The Watch .

Since 2014 he has also played the leading role in the series Murder on Shetland .

Since 2010 he has been married to the Croatian writer Tena Štivičić. The couple has had a daughter since 2016.
