action

The life of the stockbroker Jacob Harlon is turned upside down when he drives a car under the influence of alcohol and, distracted by a conversation with his fellow passengers, runs over a red light. His best friend is killed in the following accident, and the driver of the other car breaks both legs. Harlon is sentenced to several years in prison, probably u. a. also because the public prosecutor is particularly ruthless in order to achieve better statistics on convictions. Jacob is advised by his attorney not to put up with anything in prison, because that would automatically stamp him a victim. Already on the first night Jacob witnessed a mass rape of a prisoner brought in with him. When he was jostled on his first walk in the yard, he beats the person opposite, which earned him thirty days of solitary confinement, but also the attention of a white prison gang (based on the Aryan Brotherhood ). These offer him protection, which Jacob accepts.

In return, he has to smuggle drugs in his anus into the courtyard and kill another prisoner, a suspected informer. He then receives the gang name “Money”, based on his former job on the stock exchange. His gang has allied itself with a Mexican prison gang, led by Gomez, and is planning a coordinated attack on the warring black gang while they are in the yard. His cellmate warns Money not to be in the crowd during the fight to prevent the camera from identifying him. There is finally a big fight in the yard. Harlon saves Gomez's life by seriously injuring another attacker. However, he was filmed and sentenced to another nine years in prison, of which he has to serve at least 85% because he was acting on behalf of a gang. He is also being transferred to a maximum security prison. After the verdict, Harlon turns to his utterly horrified wife and advises her to forget that he exists.

In his new prison is also "Beast", the leader of Harlon's gang, who despite years of solitary confinement pulls the strings from his cell. After the previous "Unterführer" is moved to death row because he has killed a guard, Harlon gets "the keys" from Beast and takes over the vacated leadership position. He writes his son a letter advising him to forget his father and get on with his life.

After he is about to be released on parole, Harlon has to thread a large arms deal between his gang and the Mexicans. Otherwise, Beast threatens the death of his family. Harlon seems to play along at first and organizes the trade with his old friend Gomez. When his wife and son stand in front of his hotel room door, he apparently sends them both away unmoved, only to burst into tears behind the closed door.

When he finds out that one of his people is actually a police informant, he kills him in his house. Shortly before the deal, however, he uses his cell phone to send the exact location of the handover to the police. Then everyone involved is arrested. Harlon confesses, but refuses to betray Beast or anyone else involved, despite being offered his freedom. He is sentenced to life without parole.

Shortly afterwards he is brought to the cages in the courtyard by a corrupt guard, where the prisoners spend their "court time". Beast waits for him there in another cage and threatens him with the death of Harlon's family, knowing that only Harlon had the opportunity to reveal the location of the delivery. When Harlon is about to be brought back to his cell, he opens his handcuffs with a self-made key that has been smuggled into the rectum and overpowers the guard with a razor blade that has also been smuggled in. He takes the key to the cages from the keeper and then attacks Beast in the neighboring cage, whom he finally kills with his blade. He then took over the leadership of the gang, as this was the only way to protect his family from the beast.

Harlon receives a letter from his son stating that he has forgiven him. In the last scene you see Harlon, who, like Beast before, is now in tightened solitary confinement, in Beast's old cage in the courtyard.
