The Peanut Butter Falcon is an American tragic comedy by Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz , which premiered on March 9, 2019 at the South by Southwest Film Festival and was released in selected US cinemas on August 9, 2019.

action

Zak, a 22-year-old with Down syndrome, was deported from his family as a child and placed in an old people's home by the authorities. When his roommate Carl can no longer watch the boy's suffering, he helps him escape. Dressed only in white underpants, Zac makes off in the night and hides in Fischer Tyler's boat. When he tries to escape two competitors and then discovers the stowaway on board who does not want to leave his side, an unexpected friendship begins.

Zak's dream is to become a professional wrestler, just like his great role model "The Salt Water Redneck". He knows all of its fights from videos. Zac and Tyler continue their journey on a self-made raft, and he not only learns to swim, but also meets his great idol.

production

Staff and cast

Directed by Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz , who also wrote the script. Both had previously only acted as directors for shorts and documentaries.

Zack Gottsagen took on the role of 22-year-old Zak with Down syndrome, Dakota Johnson plays his supervisor Eleanor. Shia LaBeouf took on the role of Tyler, on whose boat Zak travels as a stowaway. John Hawkes as Duncan, Bruce Dern as Carl and Jon Bernthal as Mark can also be seen in other roles . In addition to professional wrestlers Mick Foley , a three-time WWF World Heavyweight Champion, and Jake Roberts , who became known for his appearances at World Wrestling Entertainment and for carrying a live snake, rapper Yelawolf also appears in the film.

Film music and publication

Schwartz and Nilson wanted to play the music in the film that inspired them to write. So on the set they used a boombox to play this music before a scene was shot. The soundtrack combines bluegrass, folk songs and spirituals and also contains original music by Zach Dawes, Jonathan Sadoff from Thenewno2 and Noam Pikely and Gabe Witcher from Punch Brothers, as well as new and classic songs by Sara Watkins , Chance McCoy from the Old Crow Medicine Show, Gregory Alan Isakov and Ola Belle Reed. The filmmakers secured the rights to many of the songs used in the film at a fraction of the expected cost.

The film was first shown in March 2019 at the South by Southwest Film Festival . In June 2019 it was shown in the Spotlight section at the Nantucket Film Festival. It was released in selected US cinemas on August 9, 2019. In September 2019 the film was presented at the Filmkunstmesse Leipzig and at the Festival of American Films in Deauville in the main competition, at the end of September, beginning of October 2019 at the Hamburg Film Festival and at the beginning of October 2019 at the London Film Festival . It was released in German cinemas on December 19, 2019.

reception

Reviews and grossing results

The film received so far from 96 percent of all critics at Rotten Tomatoes a rather positive rating of an average of 7.5 out of 10 possible points. The film also came second in the 21st Annual Golden Tomato Awards in the Best Action & Adventure Movies 2019 category .

Dieter Oßwald from the Gilde deutscher Filmkunsttheater writes that the director and writer duo Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz have achieved a veritable coup with their cinema debut The Peanut Butter Falcon : “They tell their warm-hearted tragic comedy without unnecessary kitsch calories, but with a lot of empathy for theirs Characters. The emotional moments succeed plausibly, for example when the 22-year-old talks about the bad experiences and discrimination in his life. Or when the idealistic supervisor learns from the supervisor that her protégé should henceforth be kept safe and secure in a home for junkies. "Tyler's trauma is sketched almost minimalistically with short flashbacks, and the brisk finale is just as efficient, Oßwald continues. Visually convince the buddy adventure, which turns out to be an amusing Feelgood-Movie that always hits the right notes, through often poetic pictures, for example during quiet raft rides or loud din, with which the wrestling figure is created thanks to peanut butter around the campfire . Funny deposits regularly provided the necessary loosening up. Zak's first attempt at shooting has similar slapstick qualities as his escape through a narrow window grille.

Mark Heywinkel and Michael Schock from the online magazine ze.tt describe The Peanut Butter Falcon as an almost naive, heart- blasting buddy road movie : “Even if he overshoots his imaginative ideas here and there, the drawing of the characters is particularly convincing . Because directors and screenwriters Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz do not play Zak's Down syndrome as a gimmick or teardrop factor. In fact, it hardly matters. "

The budget of around 6 million US dollars is offset by gross profits of 22.5 million US dollars worldwide. In Germany it has 121,322 visitors.

Use in school lessons

The online portal kinofenster.de presented The Peanut Butter Falcon as “Film of the Month”, recommends the film for the subjects English, German , social studies , psychology, ethics , philosophy and media studies and offers material for the film for teaching purposes. There Christopher Diekhaus writes that the first step is to discuss how the tragicomic road movie outlines its protagonist and how the creators manage to not degrade Zak to a joke, despite some comical escapades, but to send him on a poignant hero's journey. In a second step, one could develop an overview of the topic “Disability on the screen”.
