We Are Your Friends is an American music film directed by Max Joseph from 2015 . The main roles are Zac Efron , Wes Bentley and Emily Ratajkowski . The film premiered in London on August 11, 2015 and in Hollywood on August 20, 2015. In Germany, the film was released on August 27, 2015.

The 23-year-old DJ Cole from the San Fernando Valley dreams of taking off as an electro DJ and hopes that he will make a breakthrough with a very special song. During the day, Cole hangs out with his old friends, but at night he is drawn to the clubs of Los Angeles . The older DJ James Reed soon takes Cole under his wing and encourages him in his big dream. James becomes his mentor, and Cole makes the acquaintance of his girlfriend Sophie. When Cole starts an affair with her, however, there is a fight between the two DJs.

Sophie breaks up with James, whose alcoholism she can no longer endure. Cole's friend Squirrel dies after a drug party. The Circle of Friends gets into a deep crisis. Their jobs with real estate speculators are also being questioned. DJ James Reed gives his protégé Cole the opportunity to support him at a big festival. Cole's new track contains words from his late buddy and is frenetically celebrated by the audience. A short time later, he relaxed and visited Sophie at her new job: a waitress in a small restaurant.

We Are Your Friends is Max Joseph's film debut. He worked with Meaghan Oppenheimer on the script, which is based on a story by Richard Silverman. On July 31, 2014, the current title of the film became known.

In addition to Zac Efron, actress Alicia Coppola, who played the alpha werewolf Talia Hale in the television series Teen Wolf , was signed up. The model Emily Ratajkowski plays Efron's girlfriend, while Wes Bentley, who plays the opponent of the protagonist Blackheart in Ghost Rider, takes on the role of his patron.

Reviews

The film was already mixed with the start in Germany, but mostly with average ratings. The metascore of the Metacritic platform , one day after publication, is 47 out of 31 reviews. The users of the platform ( User Score ) rated the film with an average of 5.5 out of 10 possible points. At Rotten Tomatoes , the film received 42% positive ratings out of 90 ratings. At the IMDb , too, 792 users rated the film as average with 5.5 out of 10 possible stars.

In a review by film critic and actor Robert Hofmann , the film also received a mediocre rating of 6 out of 10 points. Above all, he criticizes a very predictable act that doesn't really build up to a climax. In addition, he rates the previous trailers in a misleading manner compared to the film, as the film mainly revolves around the story itself and only deals to a small extent with the origin and effect of the music, although this was in the foreground in the trailers.

Gross profit

We Are Your Friends grossed just 1.8 million US dollars on the opening weekend, lower than any other film produced in Hollywood that was released in more than 2,000 cinemas before.
