The Numbur is a glaciated mountain in the Himalayas in the Rolwaling Himal mountain range .

The 6958  m high Numbur lies on the border of the Nepalese administrative zones Janakpur and Sagarmatha . The Numbur is located 43 km southwest of Mount Everest . A ridge leads east to Khatang ( 6790  m or 6853  m ), 2.26 km away . Further mountain ridges lead north and south. The Numbur is surrounded by smaller glaciers. The Lumding Glacier lies on the northeast flank, the Dudhkund Glacier on the southeast flank and the Zurmoche Glacier in the west .

Ascent history

The Numbur was supposedly first climbed on May 29, 1963 by Hiroshi Matsuo and Mingma Tserin, participants in a Japanese expedition, coming from the south. However, this successful ascent of Numbur is doubted by many.

In October 1981 a French expedition succeeded in the alleged first ascent of Numbur over the southwest ridge. Jean-Pierre Henry, Christian Rathat and Mingma Sherpa reached the summit on October 14th. Eric Laroche, Jean-François Le Quang and Philippe Veyrac followed on October 17th.

A New Zealand expedition made a second ascent on March 29, 1982 (Peter McNally, Rob Hall , Bill King, Steve Lassche and Gavin Tweedie) also over the southwest ridge.

Further ascents of the Numbur followed in the years that followed.
