Melungtse ( Tibetan : Jobo Garu ; Chinese  乔格茹 峰 , Pinyin Qiáogérú Fēng ; other spelling: Menlungtse ) is the highest peak of the Rolwaling Himal in the Himalayas .

It is located in Tingri County in the Xigazê administrative district of the Tibet Autonomous Region , near the border with Nepal . The first ascent took place on October 23, 1992 by the Slovenes Andrej Štremfelj and Marko Prezelj .

The Melungtse massif lies northwest of the Rolwaling main ridge, over which the border between Nepal and China runs. The south face of the Melungtse towers over the valley of the Melung Chu (between Rolwaling ridge and Melungtse), on the elongated summit ridge there are two secondary peaks, including Melungtse II ( 7023  m ). The main summit joins this ridge in the northeast.

The Melungtse II was first climbed in 1988. Chris Bonington , leader of the British expedition, was the first foreigner to receive a permit from the Chinese government. Andy Fanshawe and Alan Hinkes reached the summit on the evening of May 25th and decided not to cross to the main summit, about 2 kilometers away.
