The director was Steve McQueen , who also wrote the screenplay. It is the first film in the Small Ax series developed by McQueen, which comprises five films in total.
The cast list includes Amarah-Jae St. Aubyn, Micheal Ward, Shaniqua Okwok and Kedar Williams-Stirling.
At the beginning of June 2020 it was announced that Lovers Rock was in the "official selection", a selection of 56 films from the Cannes Film Festival originally planned for May 2020 , which have been canceled in their usual form due to the coronavirus pandemic. Like Mangrove 9 , which was also to be shown in Cannes, McQueen dedicated the film to George Floyd . A first screening is planned for the New York Film Festival , which will start at the end of September 2020 , where it will be shown as the opening film. In addition to Mangrove , Red, White and Blue , the fourth film from the “Small Ax” anthology, will also be presented here. Later in the year, the film will be released in the US on Amazon Prime Video and shown on BBC One .
