action

Tara Gregson is a married mother with two children. She suffers from dissociative identity disorder .

Tara's personalities

Toni Collette plays all seven of Tara's other “I's”, who take control of their behavior when stressed or emotions are strong.

  • T is a teenager the same age as Tara's daughter Kate. She behaves very provocatively and dresses accordingly. She has a good relationship with Kate, provides her with the morning-after pill and often goes shopping with her. T often tries to seduce Max. Max refuses because he and Tara have an agreement that Max will not have sex with any of Tara's other personalities.
  • Alice looks like the perfect American housewife from the 1950s and is very dominant. She thinks she is Tara's true personality and would like to be in control of the body around the clock. Alice is initially the only one able to communicate with all personalities and describes herself as the "guardian" over the other personalities. She gets along best with Marshall. Alice is a very devout Christian and prays for herself, her family and all other personalities of Tara every evening. She often tries to seduce Max because she wants to have a child of her own since she sees Kate and Marshall as Tara's children, not her own.
  • Buck is a loud, rowdy, drinking and smoking man. He wears thick glasses and a trucker hat . Buck has a gun called Persephone and often goes to the shooting range with Max and Marshall . Unlike Tara's other personalities, Buck is left-handed. He feels sexually attracted to women and also harasses Kate's girlfriends. The “absence” of his penis is explained by the fact that it was shot down during the Vietnam War .
  • In the third episode of the first season, Gimme appears as another personality of Tara. This identity stands for the unconscious and instinctual, which in psychoanalysis is called " it ". In the course of the series it becomes clear that Alice has known Gimme for a long time.
  • Shoshana Schoenbaum is a new personality who appears for the first time in the second season. She is a therapist who communicates with Tara and all four other "I's". This personality relates to a former neighbor's therapist whose book Tara read. It is a means of balancing Tara, all of her personalities and her family.
  • Chicken is another personality that won't make an appearance until the second season. Chicken is first seen in the eleventh episode of the second season. It's Tara at the age of five. As a chicken, she behaves like a typical toddler. Triggered by the revelations from Tara's childhood, Chicken comes to light. In the eighth episode of the third season, Alice announces that Chicken is missing. Soon after, Dr. Hattera that Chicken was killed by Bryce.
  • Bryce Craine is another personality who first made an appearance early in season three when he got her to write the words You Can't Win on college paper. Later he makes Tara hurt herself. Bryce is based on Tara's half-brother, who once abused her as a child. In the eighth episode, Tara's psychology professor Dr. Hattera that he killed Chicken and that he wants to kill Tara too. Little by little he kills all other personalities.
