action

Carter (A. Tapping) and Mitchell (B. Browder) in the ice of the Arctic

Only one Goa'uld system lord remains: Ba'al . During his extraction procedure, during which the symbiote is to be removed from the host who is also attending SG-1, Ba'al announces that he is only a clone and that the real Ba'al has developed a security system to regain his power. Suddenly Teal'c , Vala and other people disappear into nowhere and O'Neill is killed by the Ba'al clone. Carter , Dr. However, Jackson and Mitchell manage to escape back to earth.

Instead of passing through the stargate of the Stargate Center , however, they end up in the hold of the freighter Achilles , which was frozen in the Arctic ice and which originally transported the Stargate to the USA. This is due to the fact that Ba'al traveled back to 1939 and attacked the freighter while sailing across the Atlantic to prevent the strengthening of the Tau'ri and the Stargate program. The captain of the Achilles , Mitchell's grandfather, was able to prevent the complete destruction of the ship with the last of his strength so that it "only" ended up in the arctic ice and not on the bottom of the sea.

The USS Alexandria used to rescue SG-1

The three are rescued from the ice by the US Navy and Colonel Jack O'Neill, but they quickly realize that the timeline has changed a lot and nobody but them knows about the Stargate or the Goa'uld. Daniel loses his left leg due to frostbite. His counterpart in this timeline is an archaeologist whose theories about extraterrestrial life no one wants to believe. Carter's counterpart was an astronaut who recently died in an accident and Mitchell does not exist at all in this timeline because his grandfather died on the Achilles , in his case the grandfather's paradox applies .

First, they try to convince those responsible in the government and the Air Force (including General Landry ) of the need to restore the modified timeline to its original state. However, they refuse, arguing that their timeline would then simply cease to exist. Carter, Daniel and Mitchell are given apartments a long way apart in the United States, are not allowed to contact each other or tell anyone about their experiences.

A year later, when they had just surrendered to their fate, Ba'al appears with a huge fleet in orbit of the earth and wants to conquer it. He has risen to become the undisputed ruler among the system lords, but does not know that there are three witnesses of the "original" timeline on earth. Teal'c is his first primus and Qetesh (in Vala's body) is his queen.

Qetesh becomes suspicious because Ba'al is obviously hiding something from her and kills him when she learns about the time travel. She now wants to use the time machine herself and is on her way to her by ship. Teal'c receives the order from the dying Ba'al to avenge his death with the help of the time machine and goes to the Stargate in a cloaked ship.

Meanwhile, the US government calls Carter, Mitchell and Daniel for help, as only they have knowledge of the attackers. The stargate from the frozen freighter sank to the sea floor, but the US was able to track down the second gate on earth, which is in Antarctica , where it is now in a small base. Together with the US President, Carter, Daniel and Mitchell forge a plan to defend the earth: With the help of a still-to-be-stolen cargo ship, the three of them want to find a ZPM, bring it to Earth via the Stargate in Antarctica and then access the antique weapons platform Operation that is being excavated.

When they are on their way to Antarctica, however, on Qetesh's orders, heavy bombardment of the Goa'uld mother ships from orbit begins, which, among other things, destroys all facilities in Antarctica. At this very moment, the Russians report that they have recovered a Stargate from the bottom of the sea (from the wreck of the Achilles ). So the three of them make their way to the Russian Stargate. Your plan now is to track down Ba'al's time machine and use it to restore the old timeline.

When they arrive at the Stargate, they are stopped by Teal'c, who they can convince to help them, as the Jaffa have already been freed from enslavement by the Goa'uld in their timeline. They find the time machine, but are attacked by Qetesh. Daniel and Carter are killed in battle. Only Mitchell manages to travel back to 1929, just before Teal'c destroys the time machine, killing himself and Qetesh.

Mitchell spends the years 1929 to 1939 quietly on Earth and then goes aboard the Achilles . He can avert the attack of the surprised Ba'al, so that the original timeline is restored. The penultimate scene again shows Ba'al's extraction procedure, which, however, takes place without any particular incident. Nobody is aware of what is happening.

The last scene shows a photo of Mitchell, who traveled back in time, next to his grandfather on the Achilles .

Background information

Ben Browder, Richard Dean Anderson, Barry Campbell and Amanda Tapping filming in the Arctic.
  • At the end of the credits there is a dedication. It applies to the Royal Navy sailors Paul McCann and Anthony Huntrod. They were killed on March 21, 2007 in an explosion in the air purification system of the submarine HMS Tireless . The submarine USS Alexandria was used in the shooting of "Continuum", which began on March 23, 2007 in the Arctic . At the time, both submarines took part in a military exercise (ICEX-07).
  • The film also features various system lords from the series in short sequences: Camulus ( Steve Bacic ), Nirrti ( Jacqueline Samuda ), Apophis ( Peter Williams ), Cronus ( Ron Halder ) and Yu ( Vince Crestejo ). These are portrayed by the same actors as in the series. Ra ( Jay Williams ) is also there, but only has an extra role, so you only find out through the credits that he is Ra.
  • There are other characters who became known as recurring supporting characters on the series: President Hayes ( William Devane ), Chief Master Sgt. Walter Harriman ( Gary Jones ), Siler ( Dan Shea ) and Major Davis ( Colin Cunningham ). They are portrayed by the same actors as in the series. The characters have only short sequences and do not influence the plot. As a result, only fans of the series recognize this as a character of the series.
  • Even Don S. Davis as Major General George Hammond has several short sequences in the film, which also have to do with the plot. He played in the series from seasons 1 to 7 and had several guest appearances in Stargate SG-1 and a guest appearance in Stargate Atlantis. As in previous guest appearances, he has a different dubbing voice here than when he was still part of the crew. He died about 3 months after the film was completed, but there is no dedication to it on the DVD.
  • The story of Mitchell and his grandfather is an allusion to the grandfather's paradox . This is also made clear in the film by Colonel Samantha Carter.
  • The film was released in Germany on September 12, 2008.
