content
One follows the adventures of Dr. Helen Magnus, her protégé Dr. Will Zimmerman and her daughter Ashley Magnus. They track down unusual creatures, such as monsters, witches, werewolves and mutants, to either kill them, capture them, and study them, or to protect them from the dangers of the world - or the world from them. In the course of the series, the story of the “five chosen ones” is told, to whom Magnus injected a serum obtained from “original blood ” - which came from an extinct vampire race - and who were thereby given special abilities; these were Helen Magnus, John Druitt, Nikola Tesla, James Watson and Nigel Griffin.
characters
- Doctor Helen Magnus is a doctor and scientist dedicated to protecting the abnormalities. She founded the Sanctuary as a sanctuary for all abnormalities to protect and explore. She is 157 years old and is one of the “five chosen ones” who injected the “original blood”.
- Doctor Will Zimmermann is a brilliant forensic psychiatrist who was recruited to the Sanctuary by Doctor Magnus.
- Henry Foss is a weapons specialist and computer scientist. He is a werewolf-like abnormal and fights it for a while, but eventually learns to accept it and even finds it useful at times.
- John Druitt - one of the "five chosen ones", used to be with Doctor Magnus. He's a teleporter . After he and the other four of the “five chosen ones” had injected the “original blood”, his character changed. It made him an emotionless killer. While this has been addressed, Druitt is still fighting his evil self. In the first 3 seasons he is blamed for the murders of Jack the Ripper , but in season 4 he is exonerated.
- Kate Freelander worked for "The Connection". After she was chased by this, she switched sides to the Sanctuary.
- The big guy (sometimes also Bigfoot) is a former patient of Doctor Magnus, whose life she saved. Since then he's been the butler , chauffeur , bodyguard and girl for everything in the Sanctuary. He is an intelligent, Neanderthal- like abnormal anomaly.
- Ashley Magnus is Doctor Magnus' daughter with John Druitt. She is a talented monster hunter and often does not understand why her mother wants to protect all beings. At the beginning of the second season she dies after the "connection" manipulated her and used her against the Sanctuary.
- Nikola Tesla - one of the "five chosen ones" who became a vampire after taking in the "original blood". Tesla is extremely intelligent and charismatic and keeps making plans for the return of the vampires.
- James Watson - one of the “five chosen ones”, whose mental abilities were enhanced after the injection of the “blood of origin”. He is a brilliant inventor, "Profiler" and is also compared with the fictional character Sherlock Holmes , for whom he is considered a role model. Watson dies during the course of the first season because the suit that keeps him alive fails.
- Nigel Griffin - one of the "five chosen ones", who received the ability to make himself invisible after taking in the "original blood". His gift was given to his daughter Anna after his death and to his granddaughter Clara Griffin after her death, who is killed in the course of the second season.

Web series
Sanctuary is the first professionally produced series to be primarily produced for distribution over the Internet.
Inventor and producer is Damian Kindler , executive producer and director is Martin Wood , executive producer and leading actress is Amanda Tapping .
On the series website, the first eight “Webisodes” could be downloaded individually for prices starting at 1.99 USD, or in “bundles” of four episodes starting at 6.99 USD. The also available HD versions were priced at $ 2.49 and $ 8.75, respectively. Microsoft's Windows Media Video and Apple's QuickTime format were available as video formats . However, broadcasting on television and publication on conventional media such as DVDs was never ruled out by the producers.
There are currently eight web episodes, each lasting around 15 minutes, which together result in two one-hour story arcs. However, the eighth web episode ends with a cliffhanger rather openly. A number of well-known faces from Stargate Atlantis also appear in guest roles in the web episodes. The first five web episodes of Sanctuary can be viewed for free on syfy.de, the homepage of the German pay TV broadcaster Syfy (Germany) .
