Benjamin James Ayres (born January 19, 1977 in Kamloops , British Columbia , Canada ) is a Canadian actor .

Ayres grew up in his native city. He made his first acting experiences during his high school days. He has played roles in musicals , Shakespearean plays, and classical plays. In high school, he also took courses in directing and film editing . After graduating from school, he first went abroad for some time. He traveled to Asia and the South Pacific as a backpacker .

Ayres returned to Canada at the age of 22; he moved to Vancouver and trained as an actor at the Lyric School of Acting in Gastown . Michèle Lonsdale Smith was one of his teachers there . He then worked in British Columba as a stage actor.

After his first film roles in Canadian and American television series, he initially returned to the theater stage. In November 2004, he took on the role of Tench in the world premiere of the play In the Eyes of God by Raul Sanchez Inglis at Beaumont Studios in Vancouver. In 2005 he starred in the one-person play Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll by Eric Bogosian in Vancouver . With this piece he also went on a tour of British Columbia.

In 2007 she played the role of Nick in the comedy Christmas in Handcuffs . He was the boyfriend of the female lead ( Melissa Joan Hart ) who breaks up with his girlfriend on Christmas Eve. 2007 took over the role of Hugh in the Nora Roberts film adaptation Deadly Flames . He was the colleague of the female lead whom she intends to marry. Ayres appeared on the 2008 CBC TV series jPod , where he played the character of Casper Jesperson. Ayres played a chain smoker obsessed with death. The series is based on the books by Douglas Coupland . In 2008 he played alongside Derek Jacobi and Judy Davis the helicopter pilot Steve Dyson, who is looking for diamonds in the Arctic , in the internationally co-produced mini-series Diamonds , which is set in Sierra Leone and Johannesburg , among others .

In the fantasy series Vampire Diaries in 2009, Ayres played the history teacher Mr. Tanner for three episodes, who was killed by Damon Salvatore in the episode Friday Night Bites and thus written out of the series. Since 2009 he has appeared as the shrewd businessman Mike in the Canadian television series Dan for Mayor .

In 2008 he received a nomination for his role in the series jPod in the category "Best Supporting Performance by a Male in a Dramatic Series" at the Canadian Leo Awards .

Ayres also works as a producer and director. In 2009 he made his own short film Scott’s Land .
