Mentors (also occasionally with a specific article as The Mentors ) is an American thrash metal and punk band from Seattle , which causes a sensation primarily with its rough lyrics.

history

The Mentors were founded in 1977 by high school buddies Eric Carlson, Steve Broy and Eldon Hoke, better known by their stage names "Sickie Wifebeater", "(Dr.) Heathen Scum" and "El Duce". They borrowed their style of music from the punk wave that was just beginning and enriched it with elements of metal and hard rock . Right from the start, the trio focused on provocation. They began to wear executioner's masks and wrote songs that were mostly about obscene and sexual subjects. Originally from Seattle , the band eventually moved to Los Angeles , California after touring the northwestern United States .

In 1982 they signed a contract with Mystic Records, which initially released an EP and a live album . El Duce, singer and drummer of the band, became the star of the band. After a few more shows, the band came into contact with Death Records, a subsidiary of Metal Blade Records . There the first two regular albums You Axed for It and Up the Dose appeared . Al and Tipper Gore used the text of Anal Vapors ( German  Analdunst ) during the hearings to launch the Parents Music Resource Center , a kind of self-regulation against violent and sexual music in the United States. At the height of this campaign attempts were made to ban the song Golden Showers , with the band defended by Frank Zappa .

In 1989, after an album for Ever Rat Records, the band went on tour with the Revolting Cocks . Then the own record company Mentors Records was founded, on which most of the other releases of the band have appeared. In the mid-1990s, the band could almost only be seen live, while the members devoted themselves to other projects. In the environment of the suicide of Kurt Cobain , the band, especially its frontman El Duce, again gained attention. He claimed in the documentary Kurt & Courtney that Courtney Love tried to hire him as a contract killer to murder Cobain, and that he knew who ultimately did it. Also in 1997, he appeared on the Jerry Springer Show , where he brought in an underage groupie , verbally abused a viewer, and advocated legalizing rape. He died in unexplained circumstances on April 19, 1997 when he was run over by a train near his home.

After his death, the band continued with Steve Broy as a singer. With Clark Johnson ("Moosedick") a new drummer was added to the band. From 2001 to 2005 "El Rapo" took over the vocals, then Mad Dog stepped in, who has been responsible for drums since 2005 and since 2008 for vocals.

Style and influence

The mentors play very primitive music that is a mixture of punk, thrash metal and normal metal . The band called their music "Rape Rock". The band had their greatest successes in the 1980s and 1990s. Despite their rather poor quality music, the band influenced a number of epigones that also relied on shock effects, such as GG Allin or The Dwarves . Musicians from other bands such as Anthrax , Ministry or Faith No More are also fans of the band. Pungent Stench covered the song The Four F Club on the now indexed EP Dirty Rhymes & Psychotronic Beats .

Steve Broy is also the bass player for the band Kill Allen Wrench .
