preparation

Since December 26, 2007, 5,000 AMPAS members have made the decision as to which films should receive a nomination. By January 12, 2008 ballot papers had to be sent to the Academy. Ten days later, it published the nominations. Those entitled to vote then cast votes again for the nominees they favored. From February 19, 2008, those responsible at the Academy counted the results. On February 24, 2008, the awards ceremony took place at the Kodak Theater.

Moderation

Jon Stewart hosted the evening of the award ceremony. Before Ellen DeGeneres ' moderation in 2007, Stewart had moderated in 2006. He also hosted the 2001 and 2002 Grammy Awards .

Live performances & presenters

Live performances of all five nominated film songs were planned for the award ceremony. Furthermore, the first presenters were named, including the four 2007 Oscar winners in the actor categories. These traditionally present the prize winners of the opposite sex in the category in which they themselves received an Oscar. So it was assumed that Helen Mirren , for example , who received the Oscar for Best Actress for The Queen last year , would present the Oscar for Best Actor this time.

Music contributions

transmission

In Germany, the award ceremony was broadcast live by the Munich TV station ProSieben . In the United States , ABC showed the event for the 33rd time. The US broadcasting rights are contractually guaranteed to the station until 2014. On the occasion of the first Austrian nomination for the Foreign Language Oscar since 1987, the ORF also broadcast the Oscar award live for the first time; in fact, the Austrian contribution was awarded the Oscar for best foreign language film .

Preliminary decisions

In June 2007, 95 countries were called upon to submit proposals for nominations for the best foreign language film . The German jury announced on September 18, 2007, from the proposals submitted for Germany at the end are tourists , the house of sleeping beauties , my guide - the really truest truth about Adolf Hitler , Strajk - the heroine of Danzig , four minutes , winter trip and Fatih Akın's drama On the Other Side of having set up the latter film. The Turkey -nominated Takva - fear of God , a drama which was also produced by Akın. Austria launched a Holocaust drama with Die Fälscher ; Switzerland submitted the comedy Die Herbstzeitlosen as a candidate.

As of October 17, 2007, it was known that 63 proposals had been accepted and have since then been viewed and evaluated by the responsible committee. Azerbaijan and Ireland submitted their country’s first submission. Nine of the total available foreign films were shot in Spanish , seven in German and five in various forms of Chinese . Of the 63 films, nine films were put on a shortlist, from which the five nominated films and the other nominations were finally announced on January 22, 2008. Surprisingly, neither the winner of the European Film Prize, the Romanian drama 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days , nor the German contribution On the Other Side were among the candidates. Instead, Stefan Ruzowitzky's drama Die Fälscher was included in the shortlist, along with contributions from Brazil, Israel, Italy, Canada, Kazakhstan, Poland, Russia and Serbia. With Giuseppe Tornatore , Nikita Michalkow , Denys Arcand and Andrzej Wajda , four Oscar-winning directors competed in this category.

For the Oscars for Best Documentary and Best Animated Fiction , selection lists were submitted in November 2007, from which members of the Academy's departments had to determine the Oscar nominations. From a total of 70 documentaries, 15 films were selected, including Michael Moore's controversial film Sicko . Twelve animated feature films qualified for the 2008 Academy Awards, including two foreign language films with Tekkon Kinkreet and Persepolis . Among the American animated films, The Simpsons - The Movie , Shrek the Third and Ratatouille were three box office hits of the 2007 cinema summer.

A preselection was also made for the categories Best Visual Effects and Best Make-up; After a presentation of excerpts from the proposed films, the three Oscar nominations were selected from seven films each. In the Best Visual Effects category, these were the films The Bourne Ultimatum , Evan Almighty , The Golden Compass , I Am Legend , Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End , 300 and Transformers . The films Butterfly and Diving Bell , Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix , La vie en rose , Norbit , Pirates of the Caribbean - At World's End , Sweeney Todd - The Devilish Barber from Fleet Street and 300 were awarded for best make-up suggested.
