history

Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski met in the early 1990s during a religion seminar at the university, where Lavis majored in history, but never completed his studies. Both founded Clyde Henry Productions in 1997 . The studio, which specializes in multimedia, stop-motion animation and special visual effects, is based in Montreal .

Lavis and Szczerbowski initially worked in the field of illustration, music videos and broadcast design and for several years published the comic strip The Untold Tales of Yuri Gagarin in Vice magazine , which achieved cult status.

Lavis and Szczerbowski's film debut was the stop-motion animated puppet film Madame Tutli-Putli , produced by the National Film Board of Canada , on which both worked from 2002 to 2007. For the first time in the history of animation films, the puppets had “real” eyes that were digitally inserted. The innovation, praised as “groundbreaking” (groundbreaking, innovative), was created by painter Jason Walker, who was responsible for the film's special visual effects. Lavis and Szczerbowski were nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Animated Short Film for the film in 2008 .

Her second film was Higglety Pigglety Pop in 2010 ! or There Must Be More to Life , which was based on a story by Maurice Sendak and was also produced by the NFB. Her short film L'anneé de l'os , which was also released in 2010, was musically performed by the group Godspeed You! Black Emperor accompanied. With Cochemare , which was inspired by works by the Quay Brothers and by Johann Heinrich Füssli's painting Nachtmahr , Lavis and Szczerbowski created an animated film for the first time that was exclusively aimed at an adult audience.

In addition to film work, Lavis and Szczerbowski continue to work in a wide variety of design and illustration fields. Her artwork for Esmerine's album Lost Voices was nominated for a Juno Award in 2016 .
