Jamal Joseph (b. 1953 as Edward Joseph ) is an American screenwriter , director , film producer and professor . He was also known as a former activist of the Black Panther Party .

Life

Joseph grew up in the Bronx in the late 1960s and joined the Black Panther Party as a teenager . He was tried for the first time at the age of 16, but was acquitted on charges of conspiracy . In 1981, Joseph was sentenced to twelve years in prison for aiding and abetting a money transport robbery that killed two police officers and a security guard. While in detention, he finished school, earned two college degrees, and wrote several plays. He was released after five and a half years. In the 1990s he began to work as a short film director , then wrote screenplays and from the 2000s also worked as a film producer. Since 1998 he has been a professor at Columbia University .

For the music film Der Klang des Herzens , he and Charles Mack produced the title Raise It Up , which was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Song in 2008 . He also wrote and interpreted the title Harlem Streetz for the film .

In 2020, the former Black Panther activist Joseph spoke about the racism of the American police after the police violence against Afro-Americans and the subsequent mass protests, and recommended lessons to be learned from the history of the protest movements.
