The Sound of the Heart is a 2007 American film directed by Kirsten Sheridan and starring Freddie Highmore , Keri Russell and Jonathan Rhys Meyers .
action
Lyla Novacek, a gifted cellist , and Louis Conelly, an Irish rock musician, get to know each other at a party and spend a night together. The next morning they separate and lose sight of each other. But the night is not without consequences for both of them: Lyla becomes pregnant, Louis falls out with his brother and leaves the band. After Lyla has an accident, her ambitious father, who has only her career in mind, claims that the child died in the accident. In truth, however, he has given it up for adoption .
Eleven years later. The musically gifted Evan Taylor, Lyla's son, lives in an orphanage . Since he is of the opinion that his parents are still alive and have not voluntarily given him away, he flees the orphanage and ends up in New York . There he meets the seedy street musician "Wizard" and his gang of children. Wizard takes Evan into the group and forces him, like the others, to earn money as a street musician. He gives Evan the stage name “August Rush”, which he reads on the side of a passing truck. In this way it can remain undetected in order not to be returned to the orphanage.
When Wizard's hiding place is stormed by the police, Wizard and Evan are separated, and Evan ends up in a church. The pastor there recognizes Evan's talent and enrolls him at the Juilliard School . Here Evan surprises with his talent and is offered to perform his composition at a concert. However, Wizard finds him again during rehearsals. Since he blackmails Evans to reveal his real name, Evans comes back to him.
In parallel, the story of his parents' life is told. Louis has an office job that doesn't seem to fill him. The two brothers discuss it at a party and Louis joins the band again. At the same time he tries to find Lyla. She now works as a music teacher and has an offer for the concert, at which Evan is also to perform his composition. Her father's death and his confession that he gave her son away lead to her accepting the offer and going to New York.
Louis is also in New York for a concert with the old band. Here he meets Evan, who has to make music for Wizard again. Both talk, but do not recognize each other as father and son. Meanwhile, Lyla tries her luck at the New York Youth Welfare Office and finally finds a photo of Evan.
On the way back from his concert, Louis discovers Lyla's name on a concert poster and leaves the car to look for her. Meanwhile, Wizard does not want to let Evan go to the concert, knowing that he will then lose the boy, but Evan manages to escape and he arrives at the concert in time. There Louis finds Lyla, who in turn recognizes her son in Evan.

Reviews
"Unusual children's film borrowed from Charles Dickens" Oliver Twist ". In the form of an overly ambitious music film, however, he cannot shape the individual storylines into a coherent whole. In addition, musically it primarily offers kitsch. "
"Kitsch-as-Kitsch-can! Director Kirsten Sheridan presents commercially well-calculated lard of the most annoying kind. The whole thing follows like a dripping romantic fairy tale of a brain-cracked story, which was always staged too much with a touch of intolerance. Even "Das Traumschiff" is sometimes more entertaining. "
