Raise It Up is a song from the soundtrack of The Sound of the Heart ( August Rush ) from 2007. In the film, it is performed by actress Jamia Simone Nash and the Impact Repertory Theater .

Use in film

August Rush (played by Freddie Highmore ) is walking aimlessly through Harlem when he suddenly hears the voice of a young solo singer named Hope (played by Jamia Simone Nash ) singing the song Raise It Up . Rush feels inspired and through Hope meets the pastor Reverend James, who encourages his further talent.

background

The song was co-written by the Impact Repertory Theater . The Harlem theater group, whose founder Jamal Joseph belonged to the Black Panther movement, was engaged as a gospel choir and asked director Kirsten Sheridan and producer Richard Barton Lewis whether they could write the song from their segment themselves. The two agreed and so the song was created like all songs in the theater: as a group work. The song was produced by Jamal Joseph and Charles Mack .

The songwriting credits complicated the situation for the Best Motion Picture Song nomination at the 2008 Academy Awards . The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences regulations for film pieces stipulate that no more than three people may be nominated for an Oscar. Ultimately, Jamal Joseph, Charles Mack and Tevin Thomas were nominated.

The song was performed at the Oscars by the Impact Repertory Theater.
