Tevin Thomas (* in Kansas City , Missouri ) is an American musician and composer .

life and career

Tevin Thomas was born in Kansas City, Missouri and grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Thanks to his music teacher Richard Wilson, he made his first public appearance at the age of 14. Thomas played saxophone and keyboard in a jazz band at the Tulsa YMCA with Robert and Charlie Wilson (singers), Ken Collier and Troy Hanson. Since earning his master's degree at the New York Institute of Technology , he has taught as a lecturer and music educator at PS.811x Bronx, in New York, where he works with autistic students.

As a musician, Tevin Thomas has worked with numerous international artists and bands, including Aisha Wonder , Ashford & Simpson , Bobbi Humphrey , Craig Harris , Dionne Warwick , Gary Bartz , Gary Byrd , Schlag Repertory Theater , Jay-Z , Jeff Redd , Mary J Blige , Nile Rodgers , Reverend Run or Roberta Flack . He also worked as one of the few pianists with the avant-garde jazz artist Ornette Coleman .

Tevin Thomas is the co-writer of the song Raise It Up with Jamal Joseph and Charles Mack which can be heard in Kirsten Sheridan's film The Sound of the Heart . The song was nominated for an Oscar in 2008 in the category Best Original Song . In 2009 the soundtrack of The Sound of the Heart was nominated for a Grammy Award .
