The film deals with the case of the policewoman Laurel Hester , who developed lung cancer after 23 years of service. In the last year of her life, Hester fought for her partner Stacie to receive the pension payments that a male partner would be entitled to after Hester's death. Cynthia Wade shows demonstrations by LGBT activists, interviews with Hester and Stacie, and excerpts from public sessions dealing with Hester's case.
