Free hero is an American documentary - short film from the year 2007 . The film, which deals with discrimination against homosexual partnerships, won an Oscar for Best Documentary Short in 2008 .
In 2015, the underlying case was adapted as a feature film with the title Freeheld - Every love is equal .

The film deals with the case of the policewoman Laurel Hester , who developed lung cancer after 23 years of service. In the last year of her life, Hester fought for her partner Stacie to receive the pension payments that a male partner would be entitled to after Hester's death. Cynthia Wade shows demonstrations by LGBT activists, interviews with Hester and Stacie, and excerpts from public sessions dealing with Hester's case.
