The US theatrical release was on October 2, 2015.

The film is based on the true story of Laurel Hester . After the American policewoman from New Jersey was diagnosed with lung cancer , she wanted to transfer her pension entitlements to her partner Stacie Andree , but the authorities did not agree. Hester appeals that pension claims in the event of death should also be able to go to same-sex life partners .

In 2010, screenwriter announced Ron Nyswaner on from the documentary - short film Freeheld to want to make a feature-length film in which Ellen Page will play a leading role.
