La Corona (German Die Krone ) is an American documentary from 2008 by filmmakers Amanda Micheli and Isabel Vega . The film was nominated at the 80th Academy Awards 2018 in the category “ Best Documentary Short Film ”.

A beauty contest is held in a women's prison in Bogotá , Colombia . The participants are u. a. Murderers, freedom fighters and thieves. The film follows four prisoners who took part in the annual beauty pageant in 2007 up to the crowning ceremony of the winner.

Emergence

The film was made because the director Isabel Vega herself comes from Colombia. Originally the idea was to attend a beauty contest there. She learned from the newspaper that one was being held in the capital's women's prison and told Amanda Micheli about it. Together they started the project, which meant overcoming many bureaucratic hurdles in particular.

aftermath

Together with Miss Gulag , Emily Schuckman Matthews of San Diego State University examined the film regarding the importance of traditional gender norms expressed by the unusual venues for beauty pageants. Both documentaries show beauty contests in women's prisons; Miss Gulag concerns Russia.

Awards

The film was nominated for the Oscar in the category " Best Documentary Short Film " at the 2008 Academy Awards.

At the 2008 Sundance Film Festival , the documentary short film received an award in short film making.

The documentary was named best short documentary film by the International Documentary Association (IDA) in 2008 .

At the Sarasota Film Festival , the film received the audience award for best short film.
