The Numismalis marl formation is a lithostratigraphic formation in the southern German Jura region (Swabian Alb, Upper Rhine Graben, Alpine Foreland). It is overlaid by the Amaltheenton Formation and underlain by the Obtususton Formation . In Franconia and eastern Baden-Wuerttemberg underneath lies the Gryphaeensandstein Formation . The Numismalis marl formation is dated to the Pliensbachian . It reaches a thickness of up to 13 m.

    history

The lithological unit Numismalis marl formation was proposed by Friedrich August Quenstedt in 1843. Quenstedt derives the name from the frequently occurring brachiopod species "Terebratula numismalis" (= Cincta numismalis ). It corresponds to the Schwarzjura gamma of the Quenstedt structure. In the Stratigraphic Table of Germany it is then defined as a formation.

    definition

The Numismalis marl formation consists of alternating layers of marls , marl limestone and individual limestone banks. The thickness is 13 m in the central part of Baden-Württemberg and is reduced to 1 to 2 m in the Wutach area and in the southern Upper Rhine area as well as in East Württemberg. The lower limit is the Cymbia Bank, the upper limit is the upper limit of the intermediate limestone. The Numismalis marl formation is dated in the lower and in the upper Unterpliensbachium. The formation includes at most the ammonite zones (from the lying to the hanging wall ): Uptonia jamesoni , Tragophylloceras ibex and Prodactylioceras davoei . The key abbreviation of the State Office for Geology, Raw Materials and Mining (Baden-Württemberg) for the Numismalis marl formation in geological maps is pb1.

    Breakdown

The Numismalis marl formation is divided into the lower and upper Numismalis marl (or intermediate limestone). At the base of the lower Numismalis marl is the Cymbia Bank, at the top the Davoei Bank.
