Giovanni Garzia Millini

Giovanni Garzia Millini (* 1562 in Florence , † October 2, 1629 in Rome ) was an Italian clergyman, bishop and cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Giovanni Garzia Millini came from a noble Roman family, he was the son of Mario Millini and his wife Ortensia Jacovacci. The family lived in exile in Florence. His first name is also given as Giangarzia , and Garzia Millini and Garsia Mellini are also mentioned. His mother was a sister of Cardinal Giambattista Castagna, later Pope Urban VII. Other cardinals from the same family were Giovanni Battista Mellini , Savo Millini and Mario Millini .

He learned his upbringing from his uncle, the cardinal, and studied law . Under the pontificate of Sixtus V , Giovanni Garzia Millini became consistorial advocate . From February 1, 1591, he was an auditor of the Roman Rota . Under the pontificate of Clement VIII , he accompanied Cardinal Enrico Caetani when this legate was in Poland. He later accompanied Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini to France to negotiate the marriage of King Henry IV with Caterina de 'Medici .

Giovanni Garzia Millini was named titular archbishop of Colossae on June 1, 1605 . He received his episcopal ordination on June 12th of the same year in the Sistine Chapel by Cardinal Ludovico de Torres , Archbishop of Monreale ; Co- consecrators were Valeriano Muti , Bishop of Città di Castello , and Gaspare Paluzzi degli Albertoni , Bishop of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi and Bisaccia . Giovanni Garzia Millini was nuncio in Spain from June 20, 1605 to May 22, 1607 .

Pope Paul V made him cardinal priest in the consistory of September 11, 1606 . On February 7, 1607 Giovanni Garzia Millini was appointed bishop of Imola , on January 7 of the following year he received the cardinal's hat and Santi Quattro Coronati as the titular church . He became legatus a latere on May 5, 1608 with the task of bringing about a reconciliation between Emperor Rudolf II and his brother, Archduke Matthias of Austria . From 1610 to 1629 Giovanni Garzia Millini was Vicar General of Rome , in 1611 he resigned from the episcopate in Imola. He was secretary of the Congregation of the Roman and General Inquisition from 1616 to 1629 .

Giovanni Garzia Millini took part in the conclave of 1621 , which Gregory XV. elected to the Pope. He was also a participant in the conclave in 1623 with the election of Pope Urban VIII. During the conclave, he himself was considered a promising candidate for a time, in one vote he received 22 votes, on July 22, 1623 he even received 26 votes from the 52 cardinals present and thus missed the papacy by only one vote. He succeeded the newly elected Pope, previously Cardinal Maffeo Barberini, on August 6, 1623 as chamberlain of the Holy Cardinals College . Re-elected on January 15, 1624, he held this position until January 13, 1625. From 1623 to 1626 Giovanni Garzia Millini was Prefect of the Index Congregation . He moved to the titular church of San Lorenzo in Lucina on April 14, 1627 and was also archpriest of Santa Maria Maggiore and cardinal proto priest . He was Prefect of the Congregation for Ecclesiastical Immunity from August 1, 1629 to October 1, 1629. On August 20, 1629 he was elected cardinal bishop and for the suburbicarian diocese of Frascati .

Giovanni Garzia Millini died on the morning of October 2, 1629 and was buried in the church of Santa Maria del Popolo .
