Giovanni Battista Mellini

Giovanni Battista Mellini (also Giovanni Battista Millini , Johannes de Millinis ; born June 9, 1405 in Rome , † July 24, 1478 ibid) was an Italian clergyman, bishop of Urbino and cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

As a seven-year-old Giovanni Battista Mellini by the antipope John XXIII. called to the chapter of the Lateran Basilica . He studied thanks to a grant by Pope Martin V the rights . Mellini became Abbreviator under Pope Eugene IV . He is occupied in this office from 1448 to 1476. During the pontificate of Nicholas V he renounced the canonical at the Lateran basilica and was instead appointed economist of the Vatican basilica . The Pope offered him the dioceses of Anagni and Sutri , but Mellini refused. He was a datar during the pontificate of Paul II .

Pope Paul II appointed him Bishop of Urbino on April 27, 1468, Giovanni Battista Mellini held this office until his death. In the consistory of December 18, 1476 Sixtus IV elevated him to cardinal priest , this was announced on December 20 of the same year. Giovanni Battista Mellini received the cardinal's hat and the titular church Santi Nereo ed Achilleo on December 30, 1476. From January 1, 1477 he was a legate in Milan and Lombardy , where after the death of Duke Galeazzo Maria Sforza († December 26th 1476) to maintain the peace. This legation lasted until May 9, 1477.

Giovanni Battista Mellini died in Rome and was buried in the family chapel in the church of Santa Maria del Popolo .

Later cardinals from his family were Giovanni Garzia Millini (1562–1629), Savo Millini (1644–1701) and Mario Millini (1677–1756).
