The Steigersbach is a 6 km long, northeast running stream in the northeast of Baden-Württemberg in the Kirnberger Forest and in the Gaildorf Basin, which flows into the upper Kocher from the left and southwest just before the Unterrot district of the small town of Gaildorf in the Schwäbisch Hall district .

geography

course

The Steigersbach arises at about 475  m above sea level. NN near the hamlet of Wildgarten a little north of Gschwend across from the road triangle there on the federal road 298 . It initially flows east-northeast and after about a hundred meters, accompanied by the Hungerweg , enters the large forest area between the main road and the Kocher valley northeast of it, in which it covers most of its course.

After about 1.6 km the Seebach flows from the right , its right upper course, which is almost the same length and almost as rich in catchment area, which arises at Gschwender Waldhaus, has a waterfall in the upper course and in its lower section was once dammed into a mountain lake, known as a Treibsee or also Schwellweiher, whose periodic, rapid drainage made it possible to raft firewood to the cooker and then on to Schwäbisch Hall in the stream sequence that naturally had too little water for this transport method . Today the partially silted lake is a natural monument.

Shortly afterwards and after the change over the district border to the Unterroter submarket of the city of Gaildorf , a brook of the same size from the Rußklinge near Honkling, also on the main road, flows from the left , the Steigersbach then swings towards the east and becomes a brook reinforced by the Sangehrenklinge from Reippersberg and passes the place where the Reippersberg sawmill once stood. Thereupon flows from the south to 369  m above sea level. NN in a strongly indented bed of the Zwieselbach , its second largest tributary, whose brook system, which is fanned out in an arc from southwest to southeast, rises from sources between the Gschwender hamlets of Buchhaus and Rotenhar in the area of the Hoher Nol ( 564.9  m above sea level ). The Steigersbach then continues to flow northeast.

Around where the well-established forest path that accompanies the brook crosses the course for the third time, another, again smaller brook flows from the left from the Säuklinge , after which the path leaves the valley basin up to its connection to the valley trail of district road 2662 Schoenberg down. At the foot of the valley, after almost three quarters of its length, the Steigersbach changes to the meadow around the Unterrot hamlet of Schönberg , the first place on the bank since Wildgarten, in front of which a mill channel branches off to the right, which flows back after crossing the hamlet.

Immediately afterwards, the largest tributary, the Osterbach , which contributes around a third to the entire catchment area, flows in from the south, the longest upper course of which through the Buchgehrnklinge originates at the Teufelskanzel under the highest peak and the northern spur Hohentannen ( 565.4  m above sea level ) in the south subsequent Frickenhofer Höhe has. After this Osterbach, the Steigersbach moves its last half a kilometer northwards between the last meadows of its own valley and then through a piece of arable land in the subsequent wide floodplain of the Kocher to its confluence with it shortly before the start of the industrial area before Unterrot at 327.1  m ü. NN and from the left.

After a 6.0 km long run, the Steigersbach flows with a mean bottom gradient of around 24 ‰, about 148 meters in altitude below its origin.

Catchment area

The Steigersbach has a catchment area of 16.5 km², which - with the exception of narrow marginal strips and a meadow around Schönenberg on the lowest course of at most a little more than 2.0 km² - is completely forested. In terms of nature, it is part of the Kirnberger Forest , a sub-area of the Swabian-Franconian Forest Mountains . The Steigersbach runs through it, mostly a little closer to the watershed on the left than the one on the right, on an approximately north-easterly course, its two largest tributaries run to it from the right.

From the confluence near the east end of the industrial area along Schönberger Straße von Unterrot, this right watershed rises to the Dürrenberg and then continues in a south-easterly direction to the Lautenwald on the K 2635 from Sulzbach towards Rotenhar between Nestelberg and Steinhöfle . Then it rises in a westerly direction to the highest point on the water reservoir on the summit of the Hohentannen ( 565.4  m above sea level ), the highest mountain and northern spur of the Frickenhofer Höhe . Up to this point, beyond the Kocher receiving water itself and a few small tributaries from it, the Great Wimbach above, which flows into it, competes with its tributaries.

Having descended on a saddle to Rotenhar, the border of the catchment area continues west to the hamlet of Waldhaus a little north of Gschwend itself; On this section, the route of the Nestelberg – Ebnisee toboggan path used to stick to the ridge line on which the Hohe Nol ( 564.9  m above sea level ) lies, an isolated Black Jurassic crest in front of the Frickenhofer Höhe. The Joosenbach drains up to the Nol , then smaller left tributaries from it the opposite side to the “Gschwender” Rot , which reaches the Kocher even further upwards via its large tributary Lein .

From the forest house at the take Fichtenberger Red current Rauhenzainbach the drain side of the now from Forest House on a shallow corridor back running, left-side watershed, in addition to the B 298 to toward Unterrot Honkling runs north, then for a short distance to Reippersberg northeast, wherein now outside the catchment area of the Eichelbach adjoins the Fichtenberger Rot. Behind the also not very long remnant stretch back to the mouth, smaller streams all drain to Fichtenberger Rot, the next and much larger left tributary of the Kocher after the Steigersbach.

The greater part of the catchment area is in the Unterrots district of the town of Gaildorf in the Schwäbisch Hall district . A smaller one, in the west and south, on the district markings of Gschwend itself and of Frickenhofen of the community of Gschwend in the Ostalbkreis , from whose other community Sulzbach-Laufen a noticeably smaller part of the district of Sulzbach and a tiny part of Laufen in the southeast extends into the catchment area.

Localities

In the very wooded catchment area there are only a few small towns and of them entirely and on both sides of the stream only the Unterrot hamlet of Schönberg in the northeast on the lower reaches a little before the mouth. The hamlet of Reippersberg, which also belongs to the Unterrot, is mostly on the other side of the northern watershed. The following hamlets are all in the municipality of Gschwend . In the north-west corner is mostly outside Honkling , on the south-west corner mainly inside Waldgarten and mainly outside Waldhaus , both close to the source of the stream itself and its first major tributary. All these are in the suburb of Gschwend itself. After all, half of the hamlet Rotenhar is located in the suburb of Frickenhofen on the southern watershed between the two highest elevations Hoher Nol and Hohentannen.

The Reippersberger Sägmühle used to stand on the middle course of the Steigersbach , now a deserted area .

geology

The two highest elevations in the catchment area, the summit of the summit of the isolated Hohen Nol and the Hohentannen spur of the Frickenhofer Höhe plateau, which extends south from here , protrude into the Lower Jurassic . Otherwise Keuper strata cover the landscape everywhere . A narrow band of marl ( Trossingen formation ) is wrapped around each of them . Underneath there is an undulating plain in the Stubensandstein ( Löwenstein formation ), in which most of the stream springs arise. Most of the stream valleys are dug into the underlying layers of the Mittelkeuper , over the Kieselsandstein ( Hassberge Formation ), the Untere Bunten Mergel ( Steigerwald Formation ) and the reed sandstone ( Stuttgart Formation ) down to the Gipskeuper ( Grabfeld Formation ) . Unlike in the wider area, the silica sandstone only takes up a comparatively small area and there is also no noticeable slope at the level of the very narrow reed sandstone band.

The main body of water Steigersbach reaches the Gipskeuper between the inlet of the Seebach and the Zwieselbach and remains in it until the mouth. Before Schönberg, the Steigersbach already runs in a floodplain sediment band that widens sharply from the tributary of the Osterbach .

Other evidence

  1. a b c d The sources give different names for the Osterbach and its upper reaches. The following description of the name sections is based on the terms chosen in the section on tributaries.
    • An Osterbachstrasse , which crosses the lower course of the Osterbach near the mouth, attests to this name.
    • The labeling on the topographic map names the lower course Osterbach from the inflow of the last right inflow opposite the southeast slope of the Hirschberg . Of the runs above, only the left tributary on the southern slope of the Hirschberg is designated with the name Hirschberg . A name Buchgehrenklinge  - anyway more of a valley than a water body name - does not appear anywhere, but a winning name Buchgehren on the mouth spur to the right of the Hirschbach.
    • The layer water names of the LUBW (see above) names the entire Buchgehrnklinge , here referred to as Osterbach , from below the Teufelsklinge to the confluence with the Steigersbach and designates the last right inlet opposite the southeast slope of the Hirschberg with the name Osterbach .
    • The online map Geoportal Baden-Württemberg ( information ) ( detailed map ( memento of the original from August 5, 2016 in the Internet Archive ) Info: The archive link has been inserted automatically and has not yet been checked. Please check the original and archive link according to the instructions and then remove this note. ) on the only relevant water layer offered there, flowing water 1: 10,000, the designations follow the water body name layer of the LUBW. Labeled on the preset background map, on the other hand, is the run with Osterbach, also referred to here as this . @1@ 2Template: Webachiv / IABot / www.geoportal-bw.de
The choice made for the designation used here is based on experience that the labels on the topographic maps are usually more reliable than the sometimes quite arbitrary designations on the water layers when sections of a flowing water body have different names. It is possible that the valley name (!) Buchgehrenklinge for the upper course blade can really be found on a local forest or location map - or it is an arbitrary renaming after the forest area on the left. Conversely, it is hard to doubt that the name of the lower course is Osterbach , which is why it was adopted here for the entire course.
