The Große Wimbach is a brook in north-eastern Baden-Württemberg of just over five kilometers in length, which flows into the Kocher from the left and west near Sulzbach-Laufen in the Schwäbisch Hall district .

geography

course

The Große Wimbach is the largest and most northerly of the brooks that reach the middle Kocher from the shoulder of the slope of the Frickenhofer Höhe from the left between the mouths of Lein near Abtsgmünd and Fichtenberger Rot near Gaildorf - Unterrot . It has a finely feathered inflow system made up of numerous blade streams. Of these, the Kleine Wimbach, which is only slightly smaller in length and in the catchment area, runs to it on the lower reaches from the right.

The Große Wimbach rises about 400 meters southeast of the water tower on Hohentannen ( 565.4  m above sea level ), the highest elevation of the Frickenhofer level on its narrow north-west spur, on the hillside forest to the east at about 510  m above sea level. NN . From the beginning the stream runs eastwards, after a little over half a kilometer it runs past the southern edge of the clearing island around Gschwend - Metzlenshof and then enters its forest gorge. Here a dirt road enters the valley for the first time, and in this section it soon reaches the Gorge of the Great Wimbach nature reserve , a popular excursion destination.

Before the Sulzbach-Laufen hamlet of Krasberg on the left, it gives way to the right in a small south arch, at the turning point of which the largest tributary of the Kleiner Wimbach flows from the south . Then for the first time there are two small settlements in clearings on the forest slope, on the left the Schneckenbusch residential area , a single property, and on the right the Wimbach farm , both of which belong to Sulzbach-Laufen. About half a kilometer later, the Große Wimbach crosses under the district road from Laufen via Rübgarten to Gschwend- Ottenried (K 2636) and flows a little later, flowing through the forest, from the left and west in front of the weir of the Laufen windmill into the Kocher .

Catchment area

The Große Wimbach has a catchment area of 9.6 km² at the drop of the Frickenhofer Höhe, which runs out to the northwest, to the northeast into the valley of the Kocher . Its westernmost point is on the Hohentannen summit ( 565.4  m above sea level ) north of Frickenhofen about 45 m above the source of the stream, it is also the highest point of the catchment area as well as the Frickenhofer Höhe; its easternmost and lowest at the mouth ( 342.2  m above sea level ) at the Sulzbach-Laufen windmill; its southernmost on the summit Strietfeld ( 551  m above sea level ) of the Frickenhofer Höhe between Mittelbronn and Ottenried.

The watershed in the north from Hohentannen to the mouth runs on the first half against the Steigersbach , which also runs further down the valley to the Kocher , on the second half smaller brooks mostly compete to the west loop around the Laufener Kransberg , of which only the one through the stone blade has a noticeable length.

On the southeast side of the catchment area, near the mouth of the Wimbach stream, the stream runs through the Harz blade to the Kocher, and further uphill towards the Strietfeld, then the more important Krempelbach .

Between the Strietfeld and Hohentannen there is at most just under 550  m above sea level. NN sinking watershed all in all to the northwest on the Frickenhofer Höhe, which is often only one to two hundred meters wide and still very flat, on which there are no bodies of water. the other side slope brooks all drain over the Gschwender Rot to the Kocher tributary Lein in the south, whose large competing left tributaries are first the Auerbach , then the Joosenbach back to Hohentann .

A little over two thirds of the catchment area belong to the Frickenhofen district of Gschwend , the rest to the Laufener von Sulzbach-Laufen area . Because of the many steep slopes and valleys, three quarters of them are forested, the remaining parts in the corridor are almost all on ridges and in clearing islands, especially in a central one around Gschwend-Wimberg between large and small Wimbach, one around the Gschwender Metzlenshof in the northwest, lie on the northeast edge of the Frickenhofer Höhe or on the low ridge between the Großem-Wimbach Valley and the downward Kocher Valley around Laufen-Krasberg.

Localities

In the catchment area are in Gschwend-Frickenhofen district

  • on the Frickenhofer Höhe a few houses from Frickenhofen , the greater part of Mittelbronn , a few houses from Ottenried
  • each in a clearing island north of the Großer Wimbach the Metzlenshof and the Steinhöfle ; between large and small Wimbach Wimberg, the Schöllhof and the Käshöfle;
  • on the slope of the Veitenbach (upper Kleiner Wimbach) the Bruckenhaus and the Kellershof .

In the Laufen district of Sulzbach-Laufen there are also:

  • the hamlet of Krasberg to the left above the confluence of the Kleiner Wimbach on the edge of a cleared island;
  • the mentioned Schneckenbusch and Wimbach there right on the valley slopes of the lower reaches
  • a few houses from Rübgarten in its corridor island at the height between Kleinem Wimbach and Kochertal.

Protected areas

The entire catchment area is part of the Swabian-Franconian Forest Nature Park . Parts of it, namely the middle Große Wimbach valley and the lower Kleine Wimbach valley, each with side valleys, belong to the FFH area Kochertal Abtsgmünd – Gaildorf and Rottal . The associated open land strip on the Frickenhofer Höhe is located in the landscape protection area named after it. A large part of the watercourses are wet biotopes, in the cleared islands there are hedges that are protected as biotopes. In the Laufen hamlet of Krasberg there is a linden tree natural monument.

In the middle valley of the Great Wimbach, the Great Wimbach Gorge is under nature protection. It is a steep section of the valley in the area of Upper Buntem Marl ( Mainhardt Formation ), Kieselsandstein ( Hassberge Formation ) and Unterem Buntem Marl ( Steigerwald Formation ), in which several waterfalls tumble over sandstone banks, fallen sandstone blocks lie on the valley floor and fresh marl demolitions Indicate ongoing severe erosion .

geology

The Große Wimbach and its tributary system are located in the Keuper , the main stream begins its course in the Stubensandstein ( Löwenstein formation ), reaching in the nature reserve at around 390  m above sea level. NN the Lower Colorful Marl ( Steigerwald Formation ). The Kleine Wimbach has an analogous course and accordingly reaches the Lower Bunter Marl between the inlet of the Unterhörnlebach and the Winterbach . Only in the common lower reaches the Große Wimbach then runs in the Gipskeuper ( Grabfeld formation ), in which it also flows.

In the catchment area above the middle Keuper strata at the edge of the Frickenhofer Höhe there is still tuber marl ( Trossingen formation ), the plateau itself is formed by the erosion-resistant stone banks of the Black Jurassic , on which Quaternary loess sediment is partially superimposed.
