The Remstal is the approx. 78 kilometer long river valley of the Rems east of Stuttgart in Baden-Württemberg and leads through the Ostalbkreis , the Rems-Murr-Kreis and the district of Ludwigsburg . It extends from the origin of the Rems in Essingen to its confluence with the Neckar near Neckarrems . It is characterized by the varied landscape and is known for excellent wines - see also: Wuerttemberg wine region , Wuerttemberg Wine Route -. Due to its proximity to the state capital, the Remstal is a popular local recreation area with a variety of leisure opportunities, hiking and cycling trails and cultural sights.

In the Remstal are the places Essingen , Böbingen , Mögglingen , Schwäbisch Gmünd , Lorch , Plüderhausen , Urbach , Schorndorf , Winterbach , Remshalden , Weinstadt , Kernen , Korb , Waiblingen , Fellbach and Remseck .

Transport routes are the Remsbahn , also called Remstalbahn, which opened in 1861 , from Aalen to Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt and the partially four-lane federal highway 29 (Schwäbisch Gmünd-Waiblingen with the Mögglingen bypass). The federal highway 14 also runs a short distance through the Remstal near Fellbach and Waiblingen. Coming from Stuttgart, however, it branches off shortly after Waiblingen in the direction of Winnenden .

leisure

Its landscape makes the Rems valley attractive for leisure activities. The 226 km long Remstal-Höhenweg, inaugurated in October 2010, stood for hiking opportunities on both sides of the river for many years. For the State Horticultural Show Green Project Remstal 2019, the Remstal-Höhenweg and Remswanderweg of the Swabian Alb Association were merged to form the “RemstalWeg”. It leads from Fellbach to the Remsquelle near Essingen and on the other side of the valley back down the valley to Remseck. Different cultural and natural landscapes are crossed, from extensive wine-growing areas and orchards through historic cities and buildings to the edge of the Swabian Alb . The Limes hiking trail , a section of the German Limes hiking trail , runs through the Remstal between Lorch and Böbingen .

The course of the river is also followed by the “Remstal Cycle Route”, which runs over 76 kilometers on the Essingen - Remseck path from the origin of the Rems to the winding meanders of the Lower Remstal.

Remstal Garden Show 2019

The Remstal Garden Show 2019 from May 10 to October 20, 2019 was a green project of the state of Baden-Württemberg. These "small" garden shows alternate annually with the state garden shows.

Its motto was “Discover the infinite garden” and is considered the first garden show to be realized along a complete river and the first garden show in Germany to be held in 16 cities and communities. Restoration measures were carried out in many places . Hedges and trees in the bank area were partially removed in order to make the river visible from bicycle and hiking trails. Steep bank areas were rebuilt so that the river was more accessible for visitors. As part of the “16 stations” project, 16 architectural offices designed a building or a sculpture in each community.

The following municipalities in the districts of Ostalb , Rems-Murr and Ludwigsburg took part in this garden show:

The areas of this garden show over a length of eighty kilometers were largely freely accessible. Only in Schwäbisch Gmünd and Schorndorf were there garden show areas requiring entry, the so-called “adventure gardens”. A Marco Polo travel guide “Remstal” was published on the occasion of the Remstal garden show .

Viticulture

History of viticulture in the Rems valley

To this day it is not yet clear whether the Romans brought viticulture to southwest Germany. Wine was stored in cellars, but so far there have been no references to press facilities. It has been proven, however, that viticulture was practiced on a considerable scale in the early Middle Ages and continued to expand until 1500. Until 1880 viticulture was practiced on all the slopes around Waiblingen. Wars, plague , fungal diseases and the phylloxera introduced from America made viticulture difficult to create in the following period. Even today, the varied landscape is heavily influenced by viticulture, but less intensively than in the past.

Viticulture in the Rems Valley today

Nationally and internationally award-winning wines establish the reputation of the Remstal as a wine-growing region. The cultivated types of wine include high-quality and new grape varieties such as Acolon , Cabernet Mitos or Cabernet Dorio , which are often offered directly by younger winemakers. At the same time, old varieties such as Riesling , Kerner , Pinot Noir , Lemberger and Trollinger are preserved and cared for. With only 10 percent of the cultivation area in the Remstal, 45 percent of the top businesses in Baden-Württemberg are at home. The majority of the 780 hectares of vineyards in the Remstal are farmed after work; the part-time winemakers are usually organized in one of the two large Remstalkellerei cooperatives or the Fellbacher Weingärtnern. Here the grapes are pressed and expanded. The Remstalkellerei is one of the largest cooperative wineries in Germany.

Uses of terms

The term Remstalpolitik , coined from 1952 onwards, refers to Karl Georg Pfleiderer , member of the Bundestag from Waiblingen , which was initially intended to assess his views as provincial, but was later turned into a positive one.

Helmut Palmer (1930-2004), who saw himself as a pomologist and civil rights activist, became known as the “Remstal rebel” .
