Gallery Stihl Waiblingen
The municipal gallery Stihl Waiblingen is an exhibition house that opened in May 2008 and specializes in works on or made of paper. There are three changing exhibitions per year. Together with the Unteres Remstal art school in the immediate vicinity, the gallery forms a cultural center in Waiblingen between the historic city wall and the banks of the Rems . The gallery u. a. through a 425-strong group of friends called “Freunde Galerie Stihl Waiblingen”.
architecture
The city gallery opened in 2008. The name of the gallery honors a generous donation from the Eva Mayr-Stihl Foundation, which made the construction of the gallery possible, and at the same time refers to the sponsor of the institution, the city of Waiblingen. The Stuttgart architect Hartwig N. Schneider designed the two new buildings directly on the Rems and was awarded the Galvanizing Prize 2011 and the Hugo-Häring State Prize 2012. A homogeneous skin made of translucent industrial glass surrounds the two buildings, which enter into a spatial dialogue with one another. In terms of urban planning, they are positioned in such a way that they are only separated from one another by an alley. The Lower Remstal art school is housed in the smaller building, while the larger building houses the exhibits from the Stihl Waiblingen municipal gallery. When it is dark, light from the gallery penetrates outside through its walls. The workshop character, the proximity to an industrial suitability for everyday use and their robustness are emphasized in both buildings. Inside you walk over gray magnesite screed and look at walls and ceilings made of exposed concrete.
Another new building completes the ensemble of buildings in the immediate vicinity, where the old chopper mill used to stand. The gallery café disegno , which opened in August 2009, and the administration of the gallery are located under a large gable roof corresponding to the roofs of the old town . The architecture is also from the Stuttgart office Hartwig N. Schneider.
Pavilion for Waiblingen
Since July 2009 the art ensemble on the Rems has been supplemented by a sculpture by the Danish artist Olafur Eliasson thanks to a donation from the Eva Mayr-Stihl Foundation . The pavilion for Waiblingen picks up on the theme of water (Rems) and the industrial-looking architecture of the art school and gallery and thus meets the artist's main theme: "The dialogue between nature and art" - the search for the physical laws in nature and theirs hidden relationships with the artificial, man-made environment.
Exhibition concept
The municipal gallery Stihl Waiblingen focuses on exhibiting works on paper. There are three changing exhibitions annually.
The exhibition spectrum is divided into the following three areas:
- Classic works on paper from the past to the present. These are works on paper that are viewed as an autonomous work of art. These can be elaborate drawings , prints , watercolors or collages , such as Turner's mezzotin inks or Rembrandt's etchings, which were shown in the gallery in the opening year.
- Working on paper as a means of mass communication. This is understood to mean works that are reproduced using mass production techniques, such as caricatures , picture stories, comics , picture sheets and posters . Popular cultural, subcultural and commercial aspects also play an important role here.
- Applied drawing from architecture, design and technology. These can be construction drawings , drafts by the industrial designer , fashion drawings or construction drawings. Above all, the aesthetic value and the creative process of this medium should be emphasized.
