Cabernet Mitos grape

Cabernet Mitos is a German, newly bred red wine variety . It was created by crossing the Blaufränkisch and Teinturier du Cher varieties . The original information provided by breeders Helmut Schleip and Bernd HE Hill that it was a cross between Blaufränkisch and Cabernet Sauvignon has since been refuted by a DNA analysis.

It was presented in 1970 by the state teaching and research institute for viticulture and fruit growing in Weinsberg . On January 24, 2001, plant variety protection was granted by the Bundessortenamt . Since then, the area under vines has increased steadily. In Germany, 320 hectares (0.3% of the German vineyard area) were planted with the Cabernet Mitos grape variety in 2007. In 2006, 317 hectares of arable land were still planted, after 102 hectares were surveyed in 2001. Small stocks are also known in Switzerland . (1.7 hectares, as of 2007, source: Office fédéral de l'agriculture OFAG)

The vine has good winter hardiness, in terms of taste there are parallels to Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Mitos is suitable for aging in barriques . The wine is rich in tannins and therefore requires longer storage.

In addition, the wine can be used to enhance the color of other red wines , as Cabernet Mitos can be assigned to the family of dye grapes . The berries of the dye grapes not only have a red skin, but also red, instead of gray or colorless pulp, so that a considerable proportion of red color pigments is also present in the juice, which makes the wine made from it particularly colorful. The color pigments are present throughout the plant tissue. As a result, the leaves also turn red relatively early. Cabernet Mitos is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.

Synonym: Breeding line number We 70-77-4 F

Origin: the vine is a cross between the Blaufränkisch × Teinturier du Cher grape varieties .

The Cabernet Cubin grape variety comes from a similar cross .
