Woldemar Friedrich Kruger
Woldemar Friedrich Krüger (* December 21, 1807 July / January 2, 1808 greg. In Kaave ; † December 24, 1893 July / January 5, 1894 greg. In Tsarskoje Selo ) was a Baltic German painter and lithographer of Estonian descent.
Life
Woldemar Friedrich Krüger was born in Kaave (German Kawa ) in what was then the parish of Laiuse ( Lais ). His father, Tenno Krüger, was a warehouse attendant. At the age of eight, the young Kruger moved to Tartu ( Dorpat ) in Livonia . Together with Karl Eduard von Liphart (1808-1891) he enjoyed an upbringing on the nearby estate of the noble von Liphart family in Raadi ( Ratshof ). In Tartu, Krüger attended elementary school and from 1824 to 1827 the grammar school. He received his first art lessons from August Philipp Klara (1790–1850) and August Matthias Hagen (1794-1878).
From 1827, Krüger studied philosophy at the Tartu University ( Imperial University of Dorpat ). He was also a student of the painter Karl August Senff . From 1830 to 1834, Krüger continued his artistic education abroad, especially in Munich and Italy . Then he returned to Livonia. In Tartu he founded a lithographic company in 1835 , which he had to sell to Georg Friedrich Schlater (1804–1870) in 1839 .
Krüger taught drawing at various schools in Tartu. In 1845 the Academy of Arts in the Russian capital Saint Petersburg appointed him a freelance artist. In 1857 Krüger became a member of the academy.
In 1847 Krüger went on a study trip to Belgium and Holland . From 1856 to 1891 he was employed as a drawing teacher at the University of Tartu. As successor to August Matthias Hagens , Krüger headed the drawing school at the university.

Krüger became known as an illustrator of numerous scientific works. He created several portraits of Tartu professors and students. Also famous are his views of the city of Tartu, which he executed with a love of realism and attention to detail in aquatint . Krüger also devoted himself to landscape painting. His style can be attributed to the realism of the Biedermeier period . Krüger also looked after and restored the valuable art collections of his friend Karl Eduard von Liphart.
