The Brunnenhausmuseum is a technical local museum in Schillingsfürst . The functional ox treading system is unique in the German-speaking area in terms of technology and state of preservation.

location

The Brunnenhausmuseum is located in the former Princely Brunnenhaus in Schillingsfürst, Brunnenhausweg 25.

history

Count Philipp Ernst zu Hohenlohe-Waldenburg-Schillingsfürst planned a well house over the Holy Bronnen in order to supply the Schillingsfürst Castle, which is currently under construction, with running water . This spring , about 1.5 km away, is the only one on the ridge of the Schlossberg that always gushes and has enough water. Since the distance to the castle was great and there was hardly any difference in height, a new technology had to be developed here. For this purpose, the fountain master of the free imperial city of Nuremberg , Martin Löhner, was commissioned with the construction.

In 1702 the well house was built and the ox treading system was installed. A system of wooden pipes led the water to the castle. There it supplied the ground floor of the castle as well as the nursery and the brewery with running water. To keep the water pressure constant, a water tower with its own reservoir was built in 1729 . In 1887 the water tower was raised in order to also supply the first floor of the castle, where the private rooms of the princely family are still located today, with running water. The ox-treading system was replaced around 1920 by an electric pump, the reliability of which was less than that of the mechanical ox-treading system. The fountain house was in operation until 1923 and then again in the summer of 1947.

In 1959, under the leadership and initiative of the painter Ludwig Dörfler, the first measures to maintain the fountain house and the ox treading facility began. The tourist and local history association Schillingsfürst e. V., which today calls itself the Association for Tourism and Homeland Care Schillingsfürst-Frankenhöhe eV, took over the maintenance of the facility and leased it for this purpose from the Princely Administration Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst in order to set up a local museum here. The first visits were possible from November 1967, and in 1972 it opened as a fountain house museum with fixed opening times. In 2006/07 the facility was completely refurbished.

technology

The pumping station works according to the mechanical principles of the inclined plane and the lever . Due to the body weight of an ox , the turntable is automatically set in motion, so that an output of around 500 W was achieved with a pump output of 40 l / min . The ox ran - like a treadmill - on the tilted disc rotating below it. For the outside observer, the ox thus apparently always stayed in the same place.

museum

The museum consists of two areas: In addition to the ox-treading system with the historic and functional pumping station from 1702, everyday objects, tools, furniture, clothing and linen, especially from the 19th century, life and work, can be viewed in the water tower and in the former well-keeper's apartment document in Schillingsfürst. A herb garden based on the model of the St. Gallen monastery garden has also been laid out. The museum's own educational concepts for water science and local history, especially for elementary school and secondary level I, round off the concept of the museum, which is run by the sponsoring association on a voluntary basis.
