Carl Theodor Severin (born September 13, 1763 in Mengeringhausen ; † February 20, 1836 in Doberan ) was a German architect . He is considered the most important representative of classicism in Mecklenburg .

Life

Carl Theodor Severin was born as the first child of the government and consistorial councilor Theodor Severin (* 1733) and his wife Christina Eleonore Henrietta Becker (* 1744). Nothing is known about his training as a builder and architect. Severin had lived in Mecklenburg since 1789.

In 1795 he was offered the office of building manager , which at that time was held by Johann Christoph Heinrich von Seydewitz . Severin was to assist him until his retirement in 1796. Since Seydewitz remained in office for a longer period, Severin first became a chamber engineer without a salary in the Schwerin Chamber of Commerce in 1795, and in November 1795 he was given the position of "Building Conductor for the local court and town buildings". In 1799 he rebuilt Gut Nustrow , which had only been owned by von Schack for a few years . In 1801 Severin was used for the first time during the construction work to build the summer residence of the ducal [ from 1815: grand ducal] summer residence Heiligendamm -Doberan. Together with Seydewitz, the salon building on the Kamp was built in Doberan . It was through this work that Friedrich Franz I became aware of him and entrusted Severin with extensive work on expanding the seaside resort of Heiligendamm and redesigning Doberan.

In 1803, Carl Theodor Severin built a mansion bathing establishment and an extension to the bathing house on the Heiligen Damm, in 1804 the conversation rotunda and in 1807 the observation tower. Almost all of these buildings are no longer preserved.

One of his first buildings in Doberan was the playhouse, which he built in 1805/1806. This was followed by the ducal palace from 1806 to 1809 and a pavilion on the Kamp in 1808. In April 1809, Severin was appointed agricultural master builder. He was responsible for the offices of Buckow, Doberan, Ribnitz , Rühn , Toitenwinkel and Schwaan . The focus of his work was still the expansion of Heiligendamm and Doberan, which is why he moved to Doberan in 1810 and built a house. Here he married Marie Eleonore Magdalena Bollow (* 1783) in the same year. The couple had three daughters and two sons.

With some difficulties, further sales pavilions and the large pavilion as a music pavilion were built on the Kamp between 1810 and 1813.

In 1814 Severin was commissioned to build a representative building as a society, dance and dining house in Heiligendamm. Today this building, completed in 1817, is the Kurhaus and part of a hotel complex.

Carl Theodor Severin was appointed chief master builder in March 1819.

His last work in Doberan included the extension to the salon building on Kamp from 1819 to 1821 and the steel bath, which was completed in 1825. At the request of the Grand Duke, who wanted to build a palace for the Hereditary Prince, Severin exchanged the residential building south of the Kamp for a building plot directly opposite on the same street and erected a palais-like, representative building here in 1823/1824. This house is known today as the House of God's Peace .

In addition to the dominant architecture of Classicism , Severin also used exotic motifs from Chinese architecture ( chinoiserie ) in his magnificent and spa buildings . It is thanks to him that Bad Doberan is one of the few places with a uniform, classicist overall appearance today.

He retired in 1835 and died in (Bad) Doberan in 1836.
