Steel bath (Bad Doberan)
The Stahlbad is a building in Bad Doberan in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania built between 1822 and 1825 in the classicism style by Carl Theodor Severin .
history
Doberan has been a magnet for spa guests since the first German seaside resort was founded in Heiligendamm . Doberan was the place of residence and entertainment for the Heiligendamm bathers. At the instigation of Friedrich Franz I , the foundation stone for his own spa was laid in 1822 with the steel bath. Originally the steel bath was built as a single-storey plastered building with a hipped roof. In 1902 the building was extended by one floor.
At first, Doberan was mainly known for its steel source. The focus later shifted to mud baths . In 1948 the name was changed to Eisenmoorbad , later the name was changed again to Moorbad .
In 1996, the Dr. Ebel specialist clinics built a new mud bath about 800 meters south of the old location. The old steel bath has been empty since then.
In 2001, the Schwaan project developer Frank Thee bought the property with the buildings. The plan was to convert it and later use it as a district court and land registry as well as building two new senior citizens' residences. On December 12, 2006, there was a fire in which the roof structure was destroyed.
The interior of the building has since been exposed to the weather and is falling into disrepair. In an interview with the Ostseezeitung in April 2010, the current owner said: "Of course, selling the property would be easier after it was demolished."
In December 2010, the project developer Reinhard Wiese and the architect Michael Montua, as interim investors, presented the plans for the renovation of the moor bath. The concept envisaged two new buildings to the west of the existing buildings. Construction of the four-star hotel complex should begin in May 2011 and the hotel should open in autumn 2012. The renovation of the existing ensemble of mud bath and courtyard building should take place in the form of a complete gutting and subsequent reconstruction. These plans never came to fruition.
Demolition intentions
In June 2013, the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Ministry of Culture proposed the demolition of the steel bath in Bad Doberan. This would mean that Bad Doberan would lose a valuable historical monument. In 2014 the property with the steel bath, which according to the synopsis is ready to be demolished, was for sale for € 890,000. According to a market value appraisal from February 2015, the value of the 20,800 m² site with the ruins was € 237,000. A foreclosure auction date has been set for September 18, 2015. At this foreclosure auction, the owner of the SPIELOASE CASILINO Group MV, David Corleis from Dorf Mecklenburg, acquired the property including the property. He intends to develop a new development plan together with the city of Bad Doberan by 2017 and to convert the forest. Thereafter, the property is to be rebuilt by 2020 while maintaining the historical facade and used as a hotel restaurant and amusement arcade, which means that the demolition plans are off the table for the time being.
