Life

Achenbach was born in Stettin as the son of a master furrier . Here he attended the Marienstiftsgymnasium and did an apprenticeship as a graphic artist in a lithographic institute. After the death of his parents, he worked as a freelance artist in Berlin and traveled from there to places in Germany, Italy and Norway . From spring 1907 to March 1908 he lived in Rome , where he was a member of the German Art Association . He attended courses at the teaching institute of the Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin and at the Royal Academy of the Arts there .

As a soldier he was posted to Limburg an der Lahn during the First World War , where he was deployed in the mail control center of the officers' prison camp because of his language skills. After the war until shortly before his death he lived in Runkel , where he founded his own publishing house for the publication of his work, the Born-Verlag.
