The Schöngrundsee is a 1943 artificially created body of water in the Bavarian administrative district of Upper Franconia south of Pottenstein in the so-called Klumpertal of the Weihersbach.
geography
The lake is located one kilometer south of Pottenstein at 373 meters above sea level . It stretches along federal highway 470 over half a kilometer to the south, up to about 300 meters before the entrance to the Teufelshöhle , a show cave opened in 1922 west below Elbersberg . It is fed by the Weihersbach , which has cut a 70 meter deep valley into the Franconian Jura .
history
In the autumn of 1942 the training company of the SS Karstwehr was stationed on the Bernitz plateau under the leadership of Standartenführer Hans Brand . In 1943, with the help of up to 700 forced laborers, the recruits dammed up the Weihersbach as a so-called water exercise area to the Schöngrundsee for training purposes . After the end of the Second World War until the 1960s and 1970s, the Schöngrundsee was initially perceived as a large trout breeding pond. In the 1980s, word got around as a local insider tip and from the beginning of the 1990s it increasingly developed into a commercial tourist use.
today
Today the lake is used intensively for tourism and as a recreational area. All parts of the bank are freely accessible via paths all year round and are designated as the Franconian Switzerland-Veldenstein Forest nature reserve. Cycling, walking and marked hiking trails lead right past the lake.
The water is extremely rich in fish; swimming and fishing is prohibited. The water watch is not on site. On the north bank there is a seasonal boat rental and a kiosk with a cafeteria.
In winter the lake is used for ice skating and curling . Secure , unguarded parking spaces are available at the root of the lake and at the northern outlet.
