After high school in Bonn , which he spent from 1786 to 1789 together with his twin brother Karl von Kügelgen , Gerhard von Kügelgen went to Januarius Zick in Koblenz to learn painting. From 1791 he was back in Bonn, where he made portraits of Elector Maximilian Franz of Austria , Archbishop of Cologne Ferdinand August von Spiegel zum Desenberg and Canstein and Count Waldstein. Then he went on a scholarship from Cologne Elector Maximilian Franz of Austria together with his twin brother to Rome and in 1795 via Munich to Riga. In 1800 Kügelgen married Helene Marie Zoege von Manteuffel from Eigstfer in Livonia, one of his pupils whom he had met in Reval in 1798 . Her eldest son Wilhelm von Kügelgen , also a portrait and history painter, has become known as the author of the much-read “Memories of an Old Man”. He was born in St. Petersburg in 1802. An older sister Maria, born in St. Petersburg in 1801, died shortly before Wilhelm was born. It was followed by Gerhard (1806–1884) and Adelheid (1808–1874).
The Kügelgenhaus (town house) was called "God's blessing" and was a meeting place in Dresden for artists and personalities of the early romantic period; Today the Kügelgenhaus is located there - Museum of Dresden Romanticism . Kügelgen was the teacher and friend of the painter Caspar David Friedrich .
Gerhard von Kügelgen was killed in the evening on the way from his studio in Loschwitz to Dresden on Bautzner Strasse by a robbery, the soldier Johann Gottfried Kaltofen. Franz Gerhard von Kügelgen found his final resting place in the Old Catholic Cemetery in Dresden.
