Jan van de Cappelle (also Capelle ; * 1626 ; † 1679 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch painter .

Life

Cappelle lived in Amsterdam all his life. His father was the owner of a cloth dyeing factory specializing in the expensive carmine red. Cappelle was baptized on January 25, 1626 in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam. Possibly he was taught painting by Simon de Vlieger . He didn't need to paint for a living, however, as he was wealthy by nature. In February 1653 he married Annetje Grotingh, and in July of the same year he became a citizen of Amsterdam.

It is not known whether he was a member of a painters' guild (such as the Luke Guild ) or ever sold paintings. The earliest known dating of his pictures is from 1645, and from the 1660s only one date is known, after that none. The reason is likely that he was involved in the family's dyeing business, which his brother also worked in. In 1674 he inherited this.

Cappelle died two years later than his wife. He was buried on December 22nd, 1679 in the Nieuwe Kerk. Cappelle had seven children. The list of his estate has been preserved, including many paintings, seven by Rembrandt alone. With 192 paintings and over 7000 drawings (almost exclusively by Dutch and Flemish painters and draftsmen) it was one of the largest art collections of its time.

According to the Dutch art historian Abraham Bredius, he may have been a friend of Rembrandt's. Rembrandt painted him and his wife (the pictures were in his estate), and he was one of the buyers in Rembrandt's forced sales in 1656 and 1658. He may have commissioned Rembrandt for his group picture The Heads of the Cloth Makers' Guild (1662). Cappelle was also painted by Frans Hals .

Cappelle was himself an important marine painter of the 17th century , whose works have grown in great esteem, particularly in Great Britain. He was less known to his contemporaries, and his biography can not be found in the collections of painter biographies by Arnold Houbraken , Joachim Sandrart or Samuel van Hoogstraaten .

Today his works can be found in museums and galleries in the Netherlands, Great Britain , Germany (including the Wallraf-Richartz Museum) and Austria . Nine paintings alone are in the National Gallery in London.

Only around 150 paintings by him are known, in addition to marine paintings, winter landscapes. Besides that, only a small number of etchings and drawings are known or clearly attributable today. His marine paintings show only calm weather and cloudy skies. According to Meyer's lexicon, they are characterized by their illumination by sunlight shimmering on the water .
