Arnold Houbraken (born March 28, 1660 in Dordrecht , † October 14, 1719 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch painter and art writer.

Life

Arnold Houbraken originally worked as an assistant to the businessman Johannes de Haan . He was also a painter himself and had learned from Nicolaes Maes (1634–1693). He also had the young Houbraken painted, who from 1672 became an apprentice to Willem van Drielenburch (around 1625 – after 1677) and in 1673 to Jacobus Levecq (1634–1675). From 1674 to 1678 he worked under Samuel van Hoogstraten (1627–1678). In 1678 he became a member of the St. Luke Guild of Dordrecht.

Arnold Houbraken settled in Amsterdam's Prinsengracht in 1709/1710 and went to England for nine months around 1713. He painted portraits and historical pictures , but despite his knowledge of history, architecture and perspective, he was not an excellent artist.

One of the fruits of his research in art history is the work De groote schouburgh by the Nederlantsche konstschilders en schilderessen (1718–19). His son Jacobus engraved the portraits for it. Houbraken died in Amsterdam at the age of 59.

family

In 1685 he married Sara Sasbout Souburg (1662–1729), a daughter of the doctor Jacob Sasbout Souburg (December 26, 1694) and had ten children with her, including:

  • Antonina (baptized in Dordrecht May 31, 1686; first Amsterdam December 12, 1736) painter, X Jacobus Stellingwerf (1667–1727)
  • Christina (died Dordrecht February 12, 1695; died after February 1760) Painter, X Antoni Elliger (1701–1781)
  • Jacobus Houbraken , (born Dordrecht December 17, 1698; greeted Amsterdam November 18, 1780)

De groote schouburgh

Arnold Houbraken is less important because of his pictures than because of a directory of Dutch painters and their biographies. His book De groote schouburgh der Nederlantsche konstschilders en schilderessen (3 volumes, Amsterdam 1718–1719) is an important historical source. The second edition followed posthumously in 1753. However, it was not the first; Karel van Mander (1548–1606) had already published the Schilder-Boeck in 1604 .

His first book was Tooneel van sinnebeelden (Description of Symbols) in 1700 , where he was based on Iconologia by Cesare Ripa . In 1714 he created Stichtelyke zinnebeelden (divine symbols) with Gezine Brit (1669? –1747 ).
