Simon de Vlieger (* 1601 in Rotterdam , † 1653 in Weesp ) was a Dutch painter .

Life

Vlieger worked in Delft from 1634 to 1638 and then in Amsterdam , where he acquired citizenship on January 5, 1643. He has been traceable in Weesp since 1649 and spent the last years of his life there. He was one of the first marine painters of the Dutch school and has painted both sea ​​storms and calm navies with individual ships, entire fleets and sea ​​battles . It is particularly outstanding in reproducing the effects of sunlight on calm seas. His pictures are numerous and can be found in galleries in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Copenhagen , Saint Petersburg , Vienna , Budapest , Dresden , Berlin , Schwerin and other places. He also etched a number of landscapes .
