Dwingeloo is a village in the Netherlands . It belongs to the municipality of Westerveld and is located in the province of Drenthe between the Autobahn 28 ( European route 232 ) and the national road 371 , which are connected by the national road 855 , which runs directly past Dwingeloo . In 2018 the village had 2,655 inhabitants.
A radio telescope is located near Dwingeloo , which went into operation in 1956 and at that time was the largest in the world with a diameter of 25 m. It went out of service in 2000, but was made operational again in 2013, used by amateur astronomers and also became a technical monument. Most of the employees of the Dutch Institute for Radio Astronomy ASTRON are still working there, and there is a LOFAR test field there .
