Willem van Mieris (born June 3, 1662 in Leiden ; † January 26, 1747 in Leiden ) was a Dutch genre , history and portrait painter who worked in the tradition of the Leiden Fine Painting School founded by Gerard Dou . His father was the famous Dou student Frans van Mieris the elder , Jan van Mieris was his elder brother and Frans van Mieris the younger his son.

Life

After his apprenticeship in his father's studio, Willem van Mieris became a member of the Leiden Guild of Saint Luke in 1683 . He served as guild captain in 1697 , 1698 , 1704 and 1708 . In 1699 he was the guild chairman. Together with Jacob van Toorenvliet and Carel de Moor , he founded a drawing academy (the Leidse Tekenacademie ) in Leiden around 1694 , which lasted until 1736 . It is believed that Willem van Mieris became increasingly blind around this time.
